"Harold and his crew did an amazing job. H&M gave us the lowest bid on removing three large evergreens trees. The high bid was 3 times what Harold's quote was! Harold and his crew were prompt, professional, considerate and went way above and beyond our expectations. Thank you H&M!"

"My giant cherry tree fell over at 5pm and I called Brian for emergency tree removal. The next morning, he had a crew out to chop down and chip the tree. He then came out with the stump grinder and took care of the rest. It was all done by 1:00pm!! I cannot recommend Sound Stump more highly. I was in a situation where the rest of the tree could have fallen and done serious damage to property. Brian saved the day; the arborists were incredibly kind, conscientious, and helpful, which I especially appreciated in an emergency. This is an exemplary company. Thank you, Brian!"

"Great, fast work with a smile! They did an excellent job removing a falling tree from my front yard. The cleanup was very thorough, too. They came out of their way to help me (I live in a remote, rural area in Western Washington near the mountains). They gave me a great price, too. I highly recommend OSO Landscaping!"

"I wanted to thank this duo couple for giving my walnut tree life again. The tree was in desperate need of trimming. Full of dead branches. So much weight on the branches that some were bent over the fence or touch the ground, the high winds broke off some of branches and was just hanging there. Last week was 80 to 100 degrees weather. They worked from 8am to 3pm for three days in a row in that heat. Me —inside the air conditioned house. They were the most trustworthy, hard working and friendly young couple I have ever met and let me tell you that it’s hard to find somebody today that has those qualities. The clean up was shocking to see, nicely raked up. I know there was walnuts from last year crop on the ground , so between walnut shells, leaves and dead branches on the ground it was all gone, just good old dirt. I can now walk under the tree with a smile. Because In that 80 to 100 degree you were under that tree for shade. Time for a BBQ. Again, THANK YOU!!!"

Arborists questions, answered by experts

The speed of your tree root removal process depends on a few different factors, including the size and type of tree. However, the fastest method of killing tree roots is applying chemical herbicide, which starts working quickly and efficiently. But this removal method has its drawbacks, such as having a negative effect on the surrounding vegetation and landscaping. Other options like rock salt and stump grinding work relatively quickly and cause less damage to your yard.

Any tree that needs to be pruned should be pruned to remove dead branches at least once a year. You may need to prune far more often if you’re trying to maintain a certain shape or to save a tree that suddenly becomes infected.

You may be looking to identify maple trees to use for home improvement projects. In that case, you can tell hard maples by looking at their leaves. Leaves will have a U-shaped dip, or sinus, between the points, or lobes, of the leaves. Leaves of soft maples tend to have V-shaped sinuses.

If you already have the cut wood in front of you, look for a light, uniform color to identify hard maple wood and check for variations of red, gray, or brown streaks and an overall darker color in soft maple wood.

The ideal depth of a tree notch depends on the tree, but it should usually be between 20% and 25% of the tree’s depth. However, if the tree is leaning towards the direction of the notch, it can be cut more shallowly—at as little as 10% of the depth. When the tree is leaning away from the direction it needs to be felled, you can cut deeper, closer to 30%.

Generally, you should prune around 20% of an apple tree’s growth—and never more than 30%. This means that if you have a severely overgrown tree, it can take a few seasons to prune it back enough to produce the healthiest fruit.

If you’re dealing with a newly planted or juvenile tree, hold off on pruning beyond the initial shaping. Wait at least a couple of seasons into fruit production since pruning can increase the number of water sprouts and unproductive foliage.
