They quickly and efficiently replaced everything in our crawlspace... insulation, missing screens, open external access, etc. And they installed a barrier beneath a bay window that had allowed animal access to the crawlspace ever since the home was built in the 80s. Hawk attacks on pets are rare, and they won’t target animals that outweigh them. Hawks typically weigh between one and three pounds. Similarly, birds may dislike the pungent aromas of garlic, onions, and chili peppers. Essential oils like peppermint, eucalyptus, and citrus can also be effective in keeping birds away. However, it's important to note that individual bird species might react differently to these scents, so it might require some experimentation to find the most effective repellent for your specific situation.

The life span of a bird’s nest depends on the type of bird building and occupying it. The process of building the nest can take anywhere from 2 days to 3 weeks. From there, the baby birds may need anywhere from 2 to 10 weeks before leaving the nest. While most birds will be grown enough to spread their weeks within 2 to 6 weeks, certain birds (namely predatorial ones) may not be ready for up to 2 1/2 months.

When it comes to keeping birds from doing their business on your porch rails, you have several DIY options and home remedies you can try: 

  • Tie a fishing line from one end of the deck post to the other. Birds won’t be able to see the line across the railing, so they can’t land on it.  

  • Hang wind chimes close by, which may scare birds away. 

  • Apply a bird gel repellent to the railings, which contains smells that birds generally don’t like. Or, similarly, you can apply citronella or lemon oil around the railings, since birds don’t like strong smells.
