"It went great!! Harry Wheeler is amazing! I needed this done as soon as possible when I contacted him and he made it happen. I needed these repairs done to sell my home and he came through for me. The price was more than I had anticipated, but the service he provided was well worth the price."

"Good people who are easy to deal with.  Framing, siding and non-finish work are their strong suits.  Fit and finish are sub-par.  Attention to detail was hit and miss; some of the misses were very significant in nature.  Job site clean up was not great and the project ran beyond the completion date by more than two months, one week of this was due to a customer change order.  The finished product is sound, passed all inspections without failure and looks good until you examine the details up close.  If you demand high quality fit & finish be sure and put the details in writing up front to avoid disappointment.  Leave no detail out when it comes to materials, no matter how small it may be, right down to the fasteners.  If you are unable to participate at this level, find a higher-end custom home builder who will spend the time necessary on details; it will cost you more of course.  It all comes down to your budget and priorities.

Deck Cleaning questions, answered by experts

What goes under your floating deck depends on your preferences. Some homeowners put landscaping fabric underneath their decks to prevent weeds from popping up through the boards. Others choose to build a floating deck over grass or gravel. However, it’s best not to set your deck directly on the ground. Instead, set your deck on blocks to keep it elevated enough to prevent moisture from rotting the wood.

Trex states that its Trex decking is an eco-friendly composite material made of 95% recycled or reclaimed materials (including plastic and wood), making it a sustainable brand of choice. According to the company, Trex is one of the largest plastic bag recyclers in the U.S., with each 500-square-foot Trex deck containing about 140,000 recycled plastic bags.

Coping is the material that lines the perimeter of a pool and seals the transition between the top of the pool wall and the water. Decking surrounds the poolscape and extends far beyond the water's edge to provide a safe walking and lounging area. In short, coping is the border between the decking and the pool itself.

The choice between Trex, a brand of composite decking, and PVC decking depends on your priorities regarding budget, appearance, and environmental impact. Both materials are durable and resistant to moisture and insects. Trex is often considered more eco-friendly because it contains recycled wood and plastic and is 25% recyclable, while PVC is fully synthetic and harder to recycle. Aesthetically, Trex is designed to look more like real wood, whereas PVC often has a glossier, more plastic-like finish. In terms of cost, Trex is typically less expensive than PVC.

Yes, deck pier blocks can be used as an alternative to traditional deck footings, especially for smaller or low-to-the-ground decks. Unlike poured concrete and buried post footings, deck blocks do not require digging or pouring. However, their use is dependent on local building codes. Some areas, particularly those prone to high winds, earthquakes, or hurricanes, may not permit the use of deck pier blocks. It is essential to consult your local building codes before choosing them for your deck project.
