"Ian was prompt in responding to my bid request and scheduling both the bid and the job. He was friendly and answered all my questions. The installers were no-nonsense and cleaned up after themselves. I’m happy with the results of my floor insulation installation."

"They were Amazing to work with! My Avista bill in the winter has always been high, but this summer I am already roasting on the hot days. I decided to look into insulating after a friend for hers done and used the rebate so it cost her next to nothing. I reached out, and Heath was very personable and professional. He came the next day to evaluate my current insulation, which was low. They got me in the following week and were efficient and hassle free. Heath filled out the paperwork so I just had to sign the paperwork for the rebate. The biggest surprise of allâ ¦ they didnâ t leave a mess! I have never hired a contractors that I didnâ t have to clean up after. They treated it like it was their own home. From start to finish they were great to work with, I canâ t recommend them highly enough. I can already tell that it stays cooler in here during the day and for once I can say Iâ m excited for winter with a house that is less drafty and Iâ m excited to save money my bill."

"I've had ice dams for years. I finally researched it enough to realize it was an insulation problem (I wish I had been smart enough to figure it out sooner). Anyway Speciality Insulation came out and gave me a truly reasonable estimate. The technician found an uninsulated heating pipe, missing batts, in addition to the original find of inadequate insulation. They fixed all of that. I have a room that was perennially cold, it's warm now, no ice dams and I am sure my gas bill will go down. They cleaned up after themselves and were very pleasant people. Very pleasant, efficient and did what they said they could do for an affordable price."

Insulation questions, answered by experts

If you have access to the foundation walls, adding spray foam insulation to your existing unfinished basement or crawl space is straightforward. Replacing existing insulation in your unfinished attic space is possible after removing the old insulation. However, spray foam insulating an existing wall after the drywall is in place isn’t possible unless you remove most of the drywall.

Closed-cell spray foam insulation itself serves as a vapor barrier (or vapor retarder). However, you may need to install a vapor barrier if you have open-cell spray foam insulation. When in doubt, work with a professional insulation contractor, as they can provide more detail about the specific needs of your home in your climate.

The life span of insulation is between 20 and 100 years. At that time, existing insulation can fall victim to gravity, resulting in compression, which reduces its insulating protection or R-value. If you can't simply add more insulation over the existing material, removing the old to increase the effectiveness of the new can reduce your energy bills and make the project worth the time and money investment.

The amount and type of insulation your home needs depends on your location, climate, and the specific installation area (attic, walls, or floors). Your local building code will typically determine the minimum required R-value. For specific recommendations, Energy Star suggests the following R-values: homes in the Southern U.S. should have R30 to R60 in attics and R13 to R25 in floors and walls; homes in moderate climates need R38 to R60 in attics and R25 to R30 in floors and walls; and homes in northern states require R49 to R60 in attics and R25 to R30 in floors and walls.

STC (Sound Transmission Class) is a rating that describes how well a building material or assembly blocks airborne sound. A higher STC rating means less noise will pass through the material, providing better sound reduction. This rating system applies to various building components, including windows, doors, flooring, drywall, and insulation.

For context, a typical single-pane window has an STC rating of around 25 (where normal conversations are audible), while a well-sealed, double-pane window can exceed STC 45 (blocking loud speech and most music). It is important to note that for some products, like soundproofing drywall, the STC rating refers to the entire wall system, not just the individual panel.

Additionally, STC ratings are most effective for measuring sound reduction at mid-to-high frequencies, such as human speech, and may not accurately reflect how well a material blocks low-frequency sounds like bass music or thunder. Because of these factors, it is recommended to consult a professional to determine the right STC-rated materials for your specific soundproofing needs.
