"He arrived to my home to add an outlet behind my tv to give it a hidden wire look. He addressed the project with me and showed me how it could be done. He even performed work same day at a very great price. He even cleaned up very well and protect my carpet with a drop cloth. II will Use him soon for a ceiling fan. I strongly recommend getting a bid from Fernando at Complete electrical solutions on anything you want done."

"I called Desert Star Electric on Monday morning and left a message, within a few hours Shirley called me back to set up an estimate appointment for yesterday. Their electrician came out, came up with a plan and a price quote then let us know he'd be able to get to us on Friday of this week. This morning the A/V company that was contracted by the restoration company to reinstall the theatre electronics came across a big problem they're not licenced for. Wiring power to the projector for our theatre room. The existing wiring wasn't up to fire code at all and needed to be redone, so I picked up the phone and called Shirley to see if that's something that they can do. It is and she let me know that their electrician and apprentice could actually get started on the can lighting installation plus get the wiring done for the projector this afternoon. They showed up at about lunchtime and by 3pm, we have 6 can lights and an up to fire code wiring system for our theatre projector. They're on time, polite, very reasonably priced, extremely knowledgeable and we're absolutely going to use them for any future electric needs in our house. Thank you so much Desert Star Electric!"

Electrical questions, answered by experts

A GFCI outlet can be 15A or 20A. The average American home power outlet is 15A.

Electrical fixes are best handled by a licensed electrician, but it’s possible to release a wire connection on your own. Be sure to always turn off the power to the outlet at the circuit breaker before beginning your project to avoid electric shock. Carefully insert the tip of a flat screwdriver into the rectangular hole beneath the wire. Hold the outlet in the palm of your other hand. Pull out the wire as you apply pressure with the screwdriver.

A ground wire is not required for GFCI to work. A ground is a third wire in an outlet in addition to the live and neutral wires. It serves as an escape conduit for electricity in case of a short circuit. If a ground wire is present, installers should connect it to the appropriate terminal. Otherwise, a GFCI will work fine without it.

This type of conversion is easy—you’ll just need to upgrade to the correct amperage in your wires before wiring the new outlet. However, these projects can be tricky without intermediate electrical knowledge, so consider consulting a pro before flipping any switches on your circuit breaker.

The common, marked as COM or C, is one of the terminals found in your light switch. It houses the live wire that supplies the input voltage. The other terminals, marked as L1 or L2, are the outputs to the light fixtures. Depending on if you have a one-way or two-way switch, you’ll either have just an L1 terminal or both an L1 and L2 terminal.
