"Joe is AWESOME. His customer service is amazing, he gets straight to the point, and more than anything, you can trust him. We had water damage on the ceiling of the garage that was coming from the front of our house, on the second story of the home. Joe did a thorough inspection and pinpointed the issue to a gutter/siding issue. He charged me a fair price, and cleaned everything up. We've experienced a few large rainstorms since he fixed it and everythign is bone dry inside. THANK YOU JOE! I will refer my friends and family."

"Our garage is awesome! Abel Construction was extremely competitive in the bid process. Savannah was honest and gave some great advise, with no high pressure sales. The timeline was right on, the crew was respectful and the craftsmanship was great. So much so that our neighbors are now using Abel to build theirs."

"Dave is an absolute champ. I was looking at some concerns and before just jumping in and proposing solutions Dave actually helped me see that my concerns were unfounded. HE WAS HONEST! We did find some areas that we could improve though and the pricing was more than fair. What I am really looking forward to is working with PLANTRAK on overhauling our kitchen. We have some big ideas and I know I can trust PLANTRAK to bring our "dreams" to life in that kitchen. Very excited to get started soon!"

Garages questions, answered by experts

Garage door sensors work by using infrared beams to detect objects in the door’s path. One sensor sends a beam while the other receives it. When the beam is broken—say, by your car or anything else—the sensors signal the door to stop or reverse. It’s all about safety and making sure nothing gets trapped under the door. If they’re misaligned, the beam doesn’t connect, and the garage door might stay open or close regardless of obstructions.

This is a matter of personal preference. However, building a detached structure is generally considered better if you intend to rent out the new space. The advantage to going with an attached garage addition is that you may pay less for plumbing, HVAC, and other features because you can use the existing systems from your home to carry over piping and wires.

During a garage door tune-up, a pro will check and adjust your door’s components, looking for any damage and loose cables, springs, or rollers. The pro will also lubricate moving parts, like the hinges and rollers, and likely tighten some screws and bolts. They’ll also adjust the door opener’s tension and alignment to make sure it’s level. Finally, they’ll wash the door to ensure it’s clean, and test the auto-reverse mechanism to make sure it’s working as it should.

The first place you start with any garage remodel, regardless of the project, is with repairs. You want a stable foundation to avoid problems from arising down the road. Once any necessary repairs are addressed, you’ll want to move on to layout changes, like installing new walls, running new electric, plumbing, and HVAC to the space, if required, and then finishing work.

The most common garage door material is aluminum, but the best material for you depends on your budget and location. Wood is the most expensive to repair but tends to add the most curb appeal, while fiberglass or composite doors cost less to fix.

Aluminum won’t rust, so it’s a great option if you live somewhere humid or rainy. Steel doors are durable but are prone to rust. If you live somewhere with extreme temperatures, hot or cold, you might opt for fiberglass, which won’t split if the temperatures skyrocket or drop below freezing.
