Steam cleaning a couch should get rid of most smells, but there are some more potent smells that require a bit more work than steam cleaning. For instance, steam cleaning won’t likely get the smell of pee out of a couch. To remove urine odor from a couch, you’ll most likely need to use an enzymatic cleaner, which targets the smell and stain.

Vinegar is acidic and makes a great cleaning agent for many items throughout the house, including some upholstery. It should not be used for any upholstery with the code S or X. It can be used for W labels. To use a vinegar solution, mix equal parts water and vinegar and blot the stain using a gentle circular motion with a clean microfibre cloth and then allow to dry completely. As with any DIY solution, test a small and inconspicuous section first.

Over time, a urine-soaked mattress will lose the pee odor on its own as long as it dries out completely. However, it’s best to help the process along either by calling in a professional mattress cleaner or by using household cleaning products like white distilled vinegar and baking soda to remove the moisture and the odor. You may want to consider replacing your mattress over cleaning it if you have multiple stains or odors that are persistent.
