The refinishing of the end table went well. The color was what I wanted and the price was reasonable. While it was delivered later than had been estimated, that wasn't a major problem.
The stools were a different experience. Because the stools were in daily use, we agreed that they would be finished independently. When the first one was picked up we had a discussion re the desired color of the refinishing. Tom suggested a dark cherry tone for and quot;contrastand quot; (The fabric to be used for the re-uphostering was light colored) I told him that I wanted a lighter color... ex. and quot;honey-mapleand quot; and showed him a rocker that had the desired tone.Tom had told me that the work would take a couple of weeks. After 3 and a half weeks when I had not heard anything, I called and was told by a female that it would be another week. A day later I was called by Tom and we agreed on a delivery date a couple of days later. When the stool arrived the color was the dark tone originally recommended by Tom. I did not say anything because I wanted the second stool to match and the time was already longer than anticipated, The second stool was delivered about two weeks later and does match in color, although darker than I wanted. The upholstery on both stools is and quot;sloppyand quot; at best. Ex.The black fabric lining underneath is not cut straight and/or even.
I was annoyed by Tom's comments re how long he had taken to complete the work on the first stool and quot; It's been a couple of weeksand quot; when it was closer to double that and then commenting on how he would like a positive review.
"We believe this review was posted in error. We do not do refinishing of furniture. Also, we do not have her name or address in our system, nor under any other name. This was not a job that Handyman Matters did."
carved frame and the bird was broken off the top and in many pieces. Tom came over and gave us an estimate for the insurance company (without charging like some others do) and then came back a couple months later to pick up the mirror to start the restoration (delay caused by waiting for insurance to come through). He returned it promptly. We were very happy with the results. Please see attached before and after photos. Tom not only did an excellent job but he was a pleasure to work with. A very nice guy who takes his work seriously and guarantees it. I highly recommend Tom and will use his services again without question.
I couldn't be more pleased. He showed up right on time on Monday September 2, gave me a price for each piece, told me which items he would need to take with him and which items he would do at my house the next time he came. He then explained that he would need half down and that I would pay for the items he did at the house at that appointment. I would pay for the items he took with him when he delivered them. Our next appointment was today, September 6. He not only fixed the pieces at my house but he also brought with him the pieces he had taken on Monday. So in four days I had six pieces of furniture returned to their original condition.
Tom is very pleasant, explains what he is doing if you are interested (I was interested.), and is a real craftsman. It's obvious that he loves what he does. He is careful but not slow, knows exactly what to do when and even had two jobs going at the same time. (While one was drying, he started working on another.)
He's on the top of my list for furniture repair.
"I completed the work in three weeks. I gave her an estimated time 2 weeks to complete the work. I guess I should have stressed the term estimate."
My chairs were returned by Tom yesterday. Wow, they are beautiful and sturdy. The Southwest Bell chair will now be a part of my kitchen set and can withstand daily use. The dining room chairs are stunning with the new upholstered cushioned seats and Tom even put a coat of lacquer on all of the chairs, which brings out the beautiful wood.
Tom was so kind to get the right thickness of cushion padding for my chairs and I really appreciate the home pickup and delivery. I only hope I can find quality workmanship at my new home as I found in American Heritage Furniture Restoration.
Tom came within a day of my phone call and quoted us a price of $1800 for the two pieces, which included pick up and delivery so that we didn't have to get them to his shop (the pieces weigh 600 lbs combined, so this was huge.) We felt that this was VERY reasonable for the amount of work that was needed. He came on time to pick them up. He completed the job on time and delivered them when he was done. And best of all, they are BEAUTIFUL. The buffet is back together. The wood gleams. The brass shines. The ugly green paint in my china hutch is gone. Tom took something that was going to go into the trash, and turned it into something that anyone would lust after in the finest antique store. If I have one regret, it is that I didn't find Tom a long time ago, so that I could have enjoyed these pieces over the last 30 years.
I will definitely use Tom again in the future. He is kind, reliable, honest, and excels at his work. I cannot give him a better recommendation than that. Thank you Tom and Miguel!
