"The process went smoothly from beginning to finish. Jeremy gave me several options for a sub-panel and once selected/scheduled the work was done in just a few hours. This installation was tricky in that our primary panel was fully utilized, but Jeremy was able to replace and combine two circuits using a newer breaker, making the circuit possible to our new sub-panel. Jeremy is detail oriented, answering questions and holding to his word. Post install, the panel looks like it was always there, and the wiring is nicely tucked inside walls/ceiling."

"The team arrived as scheduled. Alex & Tyler worked well as a team. They installed ceiling fans which we had purchased ahead of time. They had to put in fan boxes for all 3. Also we had to replace 2 bathroom fans. They supplied one of those. Lastly we needed outlets on our porch. They were able to get all this done in about half a day. We were super impressed with the ease of setting up the assessment, scheduling the work and completion of the job. The prices fit our budget. We were not pressured into additional work. In the future we are planning more upgrades around our place and we will be calling Mr Electric again. Than you Alex & Tyler for doing such a great job."

"I can't say enough good things about this contractor. I've used the other main electrical contractor in Spokane and I was not happy and I was overcharged. This business was wonderful and reasonable. They were also very fast and coming out and giving an estimate to the work I needed done. There was no charge for the estimate. They work with my schedule in arranging a time to come out and do the work which was pretty involved. The price was reasonable. I live in an old house I was having a new stove and Hood put in and needed new special circuit breakers and outlets and they install the hood lots of stuff. Brian and Darrin came out. They were such a nice young men. Very pleasant and professional. They cleaned up everything very considerate and polite. I would definitely use this company again and highly recommend them"

"Thomas at Thunderbird Power is fantastic. He KNOWS his trade (a 3rd generation electrician)! Had 2 electricians last year try to fix some broken outlets, after 1.5 hours couldn't figure it out. Another electrician troubleshot it recently and his diagnostic tests ended up NOT being the issue. Thomas had them fixed in 30 minutes and didn't have separate charges for troubleshooting ontop of fixing, just took care of it. He was WAY cheaper than all the other electricians who quoted me in the area for that and replacing all our light fixtures + fixing other issues; I spoke to 6 different electrians in depth about our projects (8 including previous guys). He was the ONLY electrician who did not make a big deal about fans, nor talked small projects into huge ones and needing a second person to help him with all the work, etc. But he did the work in the same amount of time, alone. He was very professional, timely, detail-oriented, neat, and personable (dogs ADORED him). Will hire again!!!"

"AP&L is very professional, knowledgeable, clean, and met the requirements of our build schedule. We built a 3800 sq ft contemporary home with back up generator. Very knowledgeable and assisted with lighting design and low volt controls for window treatments and security. Pricing was competitive and crew was onsite as scheduled with all materials need to complete the project. Highly recommended!"

Generator Install questions, answered by experts

Energy output depends on turbine size, average wind speed at your site, and system efficiency. A 5 kW turbine in a good wind location can generate 8,000 to 12,000 kilowatt-hours per year, which may cover a large portion of an average home’s needs. Accurate output estimates require a professional wind assessment and a review of your household’s energy usage patterns.

With proper maintenance, a whole-house generator can last between 20 and 40 years. The specific lifespan depends on how often and for how long the generator is used, and some models may have their life expectancy rated in hours of operation. To maximize its lifespan, expect to spend around $150 to $300 per year for annual maintenance checks from a qualified technician. During these checks, a technician will inspect the engine filter, starting mechanism, fuel, lubrication, and coolant levels. Consulting your installer and choosing a low-impact fuel like natural gas or diesel can also help ensure your generator lasts as long as possible.

Yes, in some locations, it is required by the National Electric Code (NEC) to have a transfer switch installed for electrical emergencies. In addition to following electrical code, generator transfer switches ensure your home is fully protected during a power outage. By switching the power from the main breaker to the generator breaker, you can seamlessly operate your HVAC, lights, appliances, devices, and more during an emergency.

If you’re wondering if you can use your electric vehicle as a backup battery, it depends on whether your EV is compatible with bidirectional charging. This technology allows energy to flow both ways, enabling vehicle-to-home (V2H) backup power, vehicle-to-load (V2L) for appliances and camping, and vehicle-to-grid (V2G) to support the power grid. Compatible EVs convert stored DC energy into usable AC power, helping reduce energy costs and enhance grid stability while providing emergency backup power.

Generators run on a variety of fuel types, ranging from natural gas to solar power. Keep in mind that fuel costs varying by type:

  • Natural gas: $2,000–$21,000 per year

  • Liquid propane: $2,000–$21,000 per year

  • Diesel: $3,000–$20,000 per year

  • Gasoline: $500–$3,000 per year

  • Solar generator: $2,000–$25,000 per unit

  • Battery backup: $10,000–$25,000 per unit
