"Revive Painting painted our entire home exterior, siding, trim, gutters, columns, and chimney. They used a solid color stain on quite an extensive deck and deck framing. And, a clear stain on the underside (exposed raw 2x6 T&G Car Decking) of two gazebos/pergolas and a deck roof cover. They also moved heavy items off the deck and are willing to return and put the items back on the deck once the stain has cured. They also painted our shed including a metal roof the surrounding rusted galvanized dog enclosure and the faded vinyl fencing on our Sport Court. I found David Beer and his entire crew to be professional, talented, capable, and efficient. All had a tremendous work ethic. They were very friendly and a pleasure to work with! They required no up-front partial payment, collecting only after the job was completed. I would definitely use them again for all our painting needs. And recommend them to anyone desirous of a quality finished product using the best materials and the right materials for the task. And, a number of people out for a walk, passing by on our sidewalk have stated how great the house looks! Thank you David Beer and Crew of Revive Painting!"

"Hire this team to paint for you! Having people you don't know work on the inside of your house can be daunting. I have a large square footage home that needed interior painting and stain match on a custom remodel. I am fussy and this team not only made me feel very comfortable having them in my home, but their attention to detail was what I needed. Although I could only budget for 1/2 the house to be done in the initial painting, I have scheduled for the 2nd half to be done when the weather turns in the fall. I n't be more pleased. Neat and clean. Personable and professional. So thankful that they were recommended to me."

Deck Staining questions, answered by experts

Deciding whether to stain or paint a pool deck depends on your budget, desired look, and the deck's material. Both options can work. Paint offers a wider variety of color options, provides excellent water resistance, and can last longer. However, it requires a primer and can eventually fade or peel. Stain is often cheaper, easier to apply, and penetrates the wood for a more natural look and longer-lasting finish. It also has great water resistance. The downsides are fewer color options and the need for a sealant. The choice can also depend on the deck material; for example, staining may be a better option for concrete as it bonds well and lasts longer than paint.

Wood stains last anywhere from two to five years, depending on exposure to the elements, your local climate, the type of stain, and the surface it’s on. For instance, vertical surfaces last longer than horizontal surfaces. Some types of woods, like dense hardwoods, will require a recoat yearly, as they are too dense for the stain to absorb. In any event, apply a recoat every 2 to 4 years. As for storage, a can of unopened stain can last up to 5 years, though results may vary.

A properly applied coat of stain will last between 3 and 8 years, depending on your climate. If you live in a place where your fence experiences a lot of moisture or high heat, your stain will last for a shorter period than in more temperate conditions. We recommend reapplying stain every 3 to 5 years to keep your wood in good condition.

Generally, these steps are included in exterior house painting:

  • Prepping and protecting the areas not being painted

  • Scraping away loose paint

  • Cleaning off dirt, grease, and debris

  • Caulking gaps and openings

  • Priming with a quality paint primer

  • Painting the prepared areas, including trim and accents with chosen paint finish

  • Adding a second coat

  • Cleaning up the site and disposing of tape, plastic, and drop cloths

Limewash and whitewash are two techniques used to give brick a light, matte finish, but they differ in composition, application, and permanence. The best choice depends on your aesthetic goals and the specific surface.

Composition

  • Limewash: A natural and environmentally friendly option made from limestone, water, and sometimes pigments. It is breathable and soaks into porous surfaces like brick.

  • Whitewash: Traditionally made from lime, water, chalk, and binders, but a similar look can be achieved with watered-down white paint. It is paint-based and sits on top of the surface.

Appearance and Finish

  • Limewash: Provides a natural, textured appearance that allows the brick's character to show through. It offers a more traditional finish.

  • Whitewash: Creates a softer, more opaque finish, often used for a rustic or shabby-chic style.

Application and Permanence

  • Limewash: Is semi-permanent and can be removed, making it a good choice if you might want to change the look in the future. It requires more skill to apply and cannot be used on previously painted brick.

  • Whitewash: Is a more permanent solution. It is more forgiving to apply and can be used on painted brick. However, because it sits on the surface, it can trap moisture.

Ultimately, if you want a breathable, natural, and reversible finish for unpainted brick, limewash is a great option. If you need a more permanent, opaque coating that can be applied over painted surfaces, whitewash is the better choice. Whitewashing may also be more economical, costing approximately $1.40 to $4.20 per square foot.
