"The crew was polite and professional. No nonsense, and had a hustle to their cadence. As a retired framing contractor I was pleased to see this efficiency as the job was completed in a timely manner. Impressed they took the time to stop and ask me how I wanted a particular aspect plumbed when in doubt. The job was done cleanly and it looks great. Highly recommended A !"

"Kevin is a very kind and good carpenter. He tries to do the best job possible for what he has to work with. In our case the foundation was bad so there was limited possibilities he had to work with."

Customers say: Super punctual

"This started out as a water leak in the bathroom that ended up wrecking the floor and drywall. Which caused me to involve my insurance company. I had to get numerous estimates which most of the companies said they couldn't match the drywall to the original and John Erwin Construction even refused to come out because they were "too busy". Dennis was the first contractor to get the insurance agent to respond to me in a timely manner. We had the bathroom repaired with a new tub and backing which was nicer then our original. The drywall was matched perfectly. We could barely tell the difference even without painting. The flooring looks great. We did have a slow down because of a manufacturer defect in the flooring but was kept notified of progress and time frame during the wait. Would highly recommend to friends and family. Very helpful and easy to deal with."

"Dale did an amazing job on my custom outdoor building! He built custom barn doors that I had requested, used quality materials for siding and accents and even installed a window. It took less than two weeks from start to finish I couldn't believe how fast he got it up! It was the best outdoor building in the whole HOA and everyone had to ask who built it because the work was such quality! I'm hiring him again to reside the whole front of my new home, dormers, roofing, and replacing insulation."

"Kevin was quick and professional! I needed my exterior crawl space covered. He left the space spotless and did a fantastic job. His rates are more than generous. I used Venmo to pay him for the job after I got to inspect it. The pic is from after and it looks 100% better than it did."

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

The cost to frame a 2,000-square-foot house can fall anywhere between $14,000 and $32,000. This price can increase or decrease depending on what type of framing you choose, the quality of the materials, the project's complexity, and whether you decide to hire a professional to do the job.

Framing most homes takes anywhere between five and eight weeks to complete. You’ll need to account for inclement weather conditions, material shipment times, the number of crew members, and the weight of your materials. If the weather is too hot, wet, or cold for the installation, this process could take closer to eight weeks.

Yes, you can find ceiling joists using simple tools if a stud finder isn't available.

Using a hammer requires patience and a keen ear. Gently tap the ceiling in a grid pattern, listening for sound changes. A hollow sound indicates space between joists, while a solid, dull thud suggests a joist. Mark the location with a pencil and confirm by tapping from different angles.

Alternatively, you can use a nail, but this method will leave small holes. You'll feel increased resistance when the nail hits a joist. Mark the spot and repeat the process every 16 or 24 inches to map the joist locations. This method is considered less reliable than using a stud finder.

When deciding whether to use nails or screws for framing, the specific needs of the project must be taken into account. Nails have long been the go-to option for framing due to their affordability, ease of installation, and ability to withstand shear forces. They are perfect for structural framing projects where fast assembly is essential. In contrast, screws offer exceptional holding power and are particularly useful in situations requiring increased strength and resistance to pull-out forces. For projects that prioritize accuracy and long-lasting quality, screws may be the preferred option, though nails remain a dependable and efficient choice.

One of the most common house framing basics for decades has been using wood for the framing work. However, some framing contractors now suggest using steel frames. Steel is lightweight, resistant to fire, and resistant to moisture, all of which are areas where wood framing could cause problems. However, steel framing is more expensive than wood and limits your ability to insulate the home.
