We moved into the area and we bought a farm with many challenges over the first few years and Brian and his crew were there for us on every occasion. Brian also install my metal roof and also fixed a chimney that needed a insert due to a past fire. I could go on with the projects Brian has been there for me on but the list seems endless. This largely depends on your environment and how well the paint was sealed. Properly sealed chalk paint furniture that isn’t regularly dinged by toys or steel boots can last 5 years or—often significantly—longer. However, if it isn’t sealed correctly or is subject to regular wear and tear, you can expect the coat to last 3 years or less.

While painting can certainly change the look of a chimney, you should think twice about giving your brick chimney the old landlord special.

Painting brick is porous, meaning it’s full of tiny holes that can soak up moisture. Those holes also allow it to dry, though. So, when you paint it, you trap any moisture inside, providing an opportunity for mold, mildew, and water damage.

Paint also shows wear faster than naked brick. This means that once you paint a brick surface, you’ll have to keep painting it to maintain a clean look. A paint job is also harder to undo on brick because of its porous nature. Once you paint it, it’s hard to go back without some serious power washing—another added cost.

This may come down to personal preference, but it’s generally best to paint the ceiling before you paint the walls. Why? Painting the ceiling can be more physically demanding, and painting the ceiling last may result in drips or splatters that would mess up freshly painted walls. By painting the ceiling first, you’ll avoid having to touch up walls after any painting accidents. It may not matter, though, if you’re painting the ceiling the same color as the walls.

It’s a good idea to sand your porch before painting. This will remove loose or chipped paint and debris, and give you a cleaner surface so that your new paint goes on smoothly. But if the existing surface is in good condition, it’s not necessary to sand your porch before you paint.

When it comes to painting your bricks, you’ve got a few options. Traditionally, lime wash (a mix of aged, burned, and crushed lime and water) was used to whitewash brick or stone. You can also find premixed brick whitewash paint that cuts out a few steps and lets you get started faster. However, for the best results, we recommend using a DIY whitewash (white acrylic paint mixed with water).
