Grain is a furniture & lighting design company based in Burlington, VT. We are drawn to simple forms that are honest about their history; wood that is native to our part of VT; and discarded materials that have a strong visual form or patina, and are far from the end of their use cycle. This is expressed in three ways: Building pieces based on a central element (found metal, a unique piece of wood) that sparks us to create a one-of-a-kind item. Designing & building our own collections. Designing & building custom commissions, in collaboration with a client, to meet their specific needs. We are in the midst of designing our first furniture collection of tables, stools and benches, designed and built in collaboration with a local metalworker. We are excited to make them available soon at several retail locations in the Burlington area. Our work is currently available at Anjou & the Little Pear in Burlington, VT, and at the gallery at The Shelburne Craft School in Shelburne, VT.Grain is a furniture & lighting design company based in Burlington, VT. Building Energy conducts in-depth energy audits and deep energy retrofits; installs spray-applied cellulose and foam insulation; builds custom solar systems; designs and installs ductless mini splits; and works in tandem with Efficiency Vermont to provide cost effective energy saving strategies for both commercial and residential clients.

"They did a great job. Were very responsive to my emails and questions. Coordinated well with other contractors that were doing work. Cleaned up after themselves. They did spray foam in the walls, roof, basement, and waterproofed the crawlspace."

Lighting questions, answered by experts

The requirements for outdoor lighting will vary depending on the type of light, where it’s located on the exterior of your home, and your local electrical code. Lights that come into contact with water (i.e. pool lights) will need to be on a GFCI, for instance. That being said, it’s safest to have any outdoor light on GFCI because of the risk of moisture. A pro can give you more specific information for your unique circumstances.

Professional repairs involve diagnosing issues, replacing components, rewiring, or repositioning fixtures to restore optimal performance.

You can take a few steps to prolong the life of your holiday lights. Make sure to replace burnt-out bulbs as quickly as possible to avoid overloading the rest of the circuit and knocking out more lights. Before packing them up each year, plug each strand into the wall to confirm everything is still working. Wrap the lights carefully back into their original packaging or something similar—winding a strand tightly together or leaving it to hang loose in a storage bin can lead to frayed or damaged wiring.

Your maintenance needs revolve around the type of foundation you choose, as well as how you furnish or decorate it. Patios require little else other than the occasional hose-down, but decks and other wooden structures will require annual power washing and sealing. You may also need to restain the wood every two to three years.

Adding a solid roof rather than building a pergola or leaving the space open will make maintenance much easier. Without a roof, you will need to spend more time sweeping, washing, and covering your furniture to protect it from UV bleaching.

Yes, most services include testing the system after repairs. Confirm with your provider.
