"We could not ask for a better experience with a painter -- Mr. Alden was prompt, efficient and clean. He is a consummate professional and a true gentleman. We had him working on our house while we were away and he sent photos of his progress with regular updates. We heartily recommend Alden Painting for all your painting needs. "Andrew Wells has been a gift from God for my dire situation. I have an extremely old house which needs extensive repairs, and through Home Advisor's recommendation I hired Andrew Wells to repair numerous holes in the soffit to prevent bats and squirrels from entering my attic. So far, he has done an incredible job! I am so impressed by his honesty and devotion and reasonable prices that I intend to hire him for future repairs/work. He truly is a blessing to the field of contracting and I am most grateful that I found him through Home Advisor. Thank you!!!"

Deck Cleaning questions, answered by experts

The “best” material is in the eye of the beholder, as each common decking material boasts its pros and cons. Poured concrete is the best budget-friendly option, but composite wood brings high-grade aesthetics without breaking the bank. Wood is the most traditional material, but it requires more maintenance than some other materials. In other words, do your research before settling on a deck material to find the one that’s best for your pool.

In general, you need a footing at each corner of your deck, and within 8 feet of each other. So, how many you need depends on the size and shape of your deck, plus any local building codes. It also depends on factors like the load capacity of your soil and the weight of your deck. You can find a footing calculator online or contact a pro for support.

Yes. Composite decking is resistant to moisture and freezing temperatures, so it’s an ideal material to use in particularly cold or damp seasons. You can install this type of decking throughout the year since it does not warp or split in the cold.

Yes, you can draw your own deck plans in many cases. However, you must know your local building codes and be familiar with carpentry principles. Even then, it's always best to run your plans by a professional contractor with experience building decks, whether you choose to DIY some of the build or not.

A covered deck can be a good investment that increases your home value—especially if you live in a hot region with a lot of sun. A covering over the deck means you can get more use out of it, even on the hottest summer days. With a permanent deck covering, you can even add ceiling fans to help cool down your deck for added comfort.
