"Roberto was the technician and he was very professional, polite, and personable. He inspected the rest of our system and told us things that needed to be changed or repaired. He showed me pictures of everything. Everything he told me about was accurate. He quoted me a price for R38 insulation , Some of our ducts were plastic and he recommended them to be changed. I agreed completely and didn't know they were plastic. I would have had them done the work but I had no price comparisons to make and besides I didn't have the money right then. So he just finished the vent cleaning and left his card. He did a great job on the vent cleaning and was happy with the work."

Insulation questions, answered by experts

Recurring ice dams along your roof eaves are a clear warning that past insulation service failed. You should also check your attic for settled cellulose, mold growth, or moisture buildup, as these indicate improper air sealing. Unusually high heating bills for the Middlebury area confirm that your thermal barrier is compromised. If contractors previously covered active knob-and-tube wiring, you must redo the work immediately to eliminate the fire hazard.

Helpful?

Complex layouts directly impact insulation service. Look for continuous wall cavities from the foundation to the roof, which are common in historic balloon-frame homes. Stone foundations, low-slope roofs, and angled knee walls also require specialized ventilation and moisture management to prevent severe ice dams. If your VT property features connected barns or older vermiculite materials, a certified specialist must assess the space to ensure proper thermal boundaries and safety.

Helpful?

When reviewing quotes for insulation service, watch for contractors who omit proof of liability insurance and workers' compensation. A reliable professional will always specify the exact R-values required for the VT climate. Avoid quotes that ignore air sealing or fail to include a blower door test. These steps are essential for proper weatherization. Choose a local professional who follows state energy standards to keep your home safe and warm.

Helpful?

Before starting insulation service, consider the extreme winter heating load in Middlebury. Look into state efficiency programs and local community agencies that offer rebates or assistance for weatherization. You must also account for the short construction season by scheduling work outside of spring mud season. Finally, address any knob-and-tube wiring in historic homes before adding materials, as covering old wires creates a serious fire hazard.

Helpful?

You can safely prepare for insulation service by adding weatherstripping to your attic access hatch and installing foam gaskets behind exterior electrical outlets. Inspect your basement rim joists and note any visible gaps around pipes or wires to share with your contractor. Never disturb existing materials in older Middlebury homes, as older materials present severe asbestos or lead paint hazards. Always hire a professional to handle hazardous materials safely.
