Also, proper drying time between steps is essential for long-lasting results, which extends the project’s time.

Granite is also harder to DIY than tile, given its weight and bulk, which increases the overall labor cost of installation. When cleaning porcelain tiles, avoid products that contain ammonia, bleach, and other harsh chemicals. You can technically install tile over tile, but we don’t suggest it. For the best results, only install new tile on a flat, sanded surface like subflooring or concrete that is prepared for tile.

If you have asbestos tile and would rather tile over it than remove it, or if your existing tile is completely flat and bonded tightly to the floor, you may be able to tile over existing tile. But experts recommend thinking twice before you do.

Thinset mortar is the best adhesive for ceramic tiles on concrete. It is easy to work with and has a slower dry time than mastic or epoxy mortars. This longer dry time gives the installer more time to adjust tiles, which is especially useful for DIYers who may not have tile installation experience. It can also be built up to help level any depressions or gaps in the concrete subfloor.
