"Charles did a great job and quickly in replacing my deck and fence supports that were rotted out due to water damage. In addition, he will be doing additional work at our home. Very reasonable for his high quality work. Bob Dooley"

"I hired Tosh to complete two projects... Repair of two sections of a wooden privacy fence in back yard which included digging out two rotten posts and replacing them in the dead heat of the summer. Also, I had a brand new interior door to be replaced putting it on the existing frame and putting on new handle. When calling for quotes all other handymen came by to see the job and quoted as they do in most cases, Tosh did not inspect the job infact, he called me back and asked if I had gotten my repairs done and lowered his original phone quote and I went with him! He was very courteous on the phone to include when he had to reschedule due to vehicle trouble and other situations, etc. The fencing was completed despite the fact I believe it took much, much longer than expected and I felt badly because it was such a hot day! Believe it would have sped up the process and been well worth it to the handyman if a hole digger had been rented for the project (since this was obviously not something they had in their inventory of equipment) The holes were dug in very dry soil with a manual hole digger.... Long story short the door could not be installed as it did not "fit the opening" in the doorway and I was told there must be something wrong or incorrect about the door as it should have fit. The handyman did not have the proper tool to cut out for the hinges but did this manually and did a fairly nice job considering he did not have a Dremel as he stated he did not bring with him. Not able to hang the door, hinges have been cut so there is no returning the door so I have a door that cannot be hung and must start over with this project! I felt a lot of this could have been avoided if the handyman had inspected the job prior to coming to perform. I paid him the amount quoted to include hanging the door... plus the cost of the two wooden posts. I had thought that the original post WAS included in the quote but... guess not. I had advised from the start one post was rotted and would need to be replaced and purchased as part of the project. In other cases, the cost of materials was included in the quote from handymen....I assumed the same for this project. The gentleman was young, very quiet, worked very hard for a long time and was certainly very courteous."

Fencing questions, answered by experts

Before requesting fencing services in Martinsville, gather your property survey to confirm boundaries, and clearly mark the lines on your lot. Identify all visible utility markers and note any sloped or uneven ground, as Martinsville’s hilly terrain can affect installation. Review neighborhood guidelines and any easements. Take photos of your yard, document mature trees, and note drainage patterns to help your fencing contractor plan effectively.

Helpful?

To avoid delays with fencing projects in Martinsville, secure a current property survey and apply for city permits early, as processing can take time. Mark all utilities and review neighborhood or historic district rules. Choose a contractor experienced with Martinsville’s hilly terrain and clay soil. Schedule installation for spring or fall to minimize weather disruptions, and confirm all setback requirements before work begins.

Helpful?

Professionals in Martinsville prioritize confirming property boundaries and marking utilities before starting fencing work. They address the area’s clay soil, which can require deeper posts for stability, and account for local drainage to prevent water pooling. In historic districts, design approvals are handled first. Contractors also communicate with neighbors about shared lines and select materials that withstand Martinsville’s humidity and temperature swings.

Helpful?

After fencing projects in Martinsville, it’s important to document the finished fence with clear photos and schedule any required city inspections. Register any warranties for materials or workmanship. Inspect your fence seasonally for shifting due to soil movement, especially after heavy rains. Clean vinyl or composite fences twice a year, reseal wood as needed, and check metal for rust to ensure your fence remains in top condition.

Helpful?

Martinsville’s humid climate, with frequent rainfall and clay-heavy soils, can impact fencing projects by causing shifting or settling after installation. Hot summers may accelerate wood weathering, while mild winters still bring occasional freezes that affect post stability. Scheduling fencing services in late spring or early fall helps avoid heavy rain and ensures the soil is workable, leading to longer-lasting results for your fence.
