"We could not be happier with the service and the quality of the work from Valley Roofing.  Our home is 5000 Sf and 120' long.  It was an old country store for many years and had presented numerous challenges to say the least.  Lowell's thorough inspection and assessment of the job allowed him to recommend products that best fit our requirements for vinyl siding, gutters, decking, handrails and sun tunnels.  He explained the pros and cons of different products and advised us on what would work best.  Jeff and Joe the siding crew are perfectionists to say the least.  Their attention to detail, workmanship and ability to solve a multitude of challenges involving vinyl and metal trim on an old house that has 5 additions was outstanding.  The project managers and installation crews for the decking, handrails, gutters and sun tunnels were excellent. All the work was performed on time and crews always kept us up to date on progress.  The recommendations I received by all the crews throughout the job to give us the best job possible were always on the mark and resulted in a beautiful home.  As our home is on a main road we receive compliments all the time from people in town on how amazing the house looks and have had people knock on the door to ask us about the job and who did the work. "The Williams Brothers Tree & Lawn Service team were great! My mother had a large dead tree in her back yard that she was worried it could hit the house if it came down in a storm. The crew drove the truck into the fenced dog area, missed the drainspouts, trimmed the tree up, listened to my mother's concerns, etc. They were so professional and friendly. She said the main guy in the bucket who did the tree topping was a 'master' at how he went about it. Very impressed. The other guys that came to help also cleared away any trace of mess, raked, and when they left they shut the farm gate on the dog's fence as well as took the time to replace the log-barricades we use to keep the dogs from crawling under the gate. Super guys, extremely fair price. Was really nice to find a company like them in the area."

It’s best to schedule regular gutter cleanings before there’s a major issue, but sometimes life gets in the way. Luckily, a few telltale signs will let you know when to clean your gutters ASAP:

  • You notice built-up debris in your gutters.

  • Your gutters overflow with water when it rains.

  • Water doesn’t readily flow from your downspouts.

  • Your gutters are damaged or visibly leaking.

  • You notice evidence of leaking along your roof, siding, yard, or pavement.

  • Your gutters have pulled away from your roofing or exterior walls.

  • You see water damage on your soffits or fascia.

  • You have weeds growing in your gutters.

  • You start to see ants or other insects around your gutters or in your home.

  • You suddenly have issues with leaks in your crawl space or basement.

If you’re not interested in digging up your yard, but you still need to direct water away from your house, another option is to extend your downspouts further out into the yard. Two methods to do this are:

  • Adding a splashguard. This is the simplest method. You can purchase a splashguard at your local hardware store and place it under your downspout. This will act as a funnel to direct water away from your house.

  • Add downspout extension at the end. You can also add an additional downspout to the end of the “elbow” as a way to extend the water further out into your yard. Some hardware stores sell downspouts with a flexible extension that you can maneuver around your yard.

The above alternatives are great options if your gutters are above a slab foundation that you wouldn’t want to dig up. One downside to these methods is if your yard slopes back upwards to your home, then the water won’t actually flow away. In which case, burying your downspouts if the best option to avoid flooding and water damage to your home.

Calcium chloride is an ice melt that is safe for gutters. Once in your gutters, the calcium chloride will melt through both ice and snow, creating a channel for water to flow.

You can remove your gutters before painting, but it's rarely required. It can be easier to paint gutters on the ground once you or a pro have removed them, but replacing them afterward can be challenging. In these cases, removing gutters may be impractical. Make your decision based on your comfort level and abilities.

The first rule of knowing how to install gutters is that water coming from gutters should be directed 4 feet to 6 feet away from your home. Depending on the specifics of your property, water can be directed to a cistern, municipal drainage ditch, or the street. Water should never be directed toward a neighbor's yard.
