"They were eager to take my blower as I walked in with the broken cord in my hand. I thought they would fix it right then and there. They put a tag on it, told me it would cost $25 and told me they would call me when it's ready. 4 days later I get a call it was ready. I asked the total price. He said ...^^%&^^$#@#%(*&$$@! (some mumbo jumbo).... and that will be an additional cost. He said the total comes to $47. There was no problems with my blower. I was using it. I stopped to talk with a neighbor. the cord broke when I tried to start it to finish my yard. It was not a new blower but it worked just fine. I arrived at the store and paid the $47. I tried to start it while at the store and with one pull the handle came off the cord. The Jedd took the blower to the back and 10 minutes later came back with the blower and the handle attached. I pulled it several more time and it would not start. Jedd didn't even look my way. I pulled it a few more times and it would not start. He asked when was the last time I used it. I explained, I was using it the day I bought it in. (What I don't understand is why didn't they try to start it before them called me that i was ready. Or at least pull the cord a couple times.) He said, oh. He didn't offer to look at it. He didn't make any suggestions. Nothing. I got the blower home and it has not started since. I ordered a new one from Amazon. I am disappointed in the service or lack of service from Jedd and the Portsmouth Land and Coates."

Lawn Tool Repair questions, answered by experts

Yes, many repair services include blade sharpening as part of the maintenance package.

Replacing a lawn mower pull cord yourself should only cost you the supplies, which comes to around $25. For more complex repairs, you’ll need to get a quote from a local lawn mower repair shop.

Sometimes dark smoke trailing out of your lawn mower is the result of excess oil. It smokes as it burns off. Other times, it could signal a problem with the combustion or contaminated fuel. If changing the fuel and cleaning your mower doesn’t help, call a professional (especially if the smoke is white).

Before your lawn mower quits working entirely, it’ll likely give you some signs of wear and tear that indicate a repair is needed. Signs that you might need repairs to your lawn mower include:

  • Oil leaks

  • Vibrating engine

  • Smoking exhaust

  • Increase in time to mow

  • Unusual noises

  • Increase in gas consumption

The best and safest way to deal with used motor oil is to bring it to an approved facility to be recycled and refined into new material. You may see recommendations to use old oil as an equipment lubricant or wood stain, but using it in these ways can be dangerous, messy, and environmentally irresponsible.
