Vinegar and baking soda can effectively remove old carpet stains, and there are a few common methods for application. One method involves applying them separately: sprinkle baking soda over the stain, let it sit for 15 to 30 minutes, then vacuum it up. Afterward, blot the area with a solution of equal parts white vinegar and water. Another method combines the ingredients on the stain to create a foaming reaction that helps lift it. Ozone smoke removal uses an ozone generator to eliminate stubborn odors from sources like house fires, wildfires, or cigarette smoke. Ozone (O3) is a highly reactive and unstable gas that effectively neutralizes smoke odors through a process called oxidation. It 'donates' its extra oxygen molecule to the organic compounds causing the smell, altering their structure and eliminating the odor, with oxygen being the primary byproduct. This method can be effective on building materials and furniture. However, because improper use of an ozone generator can be dangerous to your health, this treatment is best left to a professional.

You should always use hot water to clean your carpets. The heat will help lift dirt and stains as you work over them with your carpet cleaner. Before you fill your tank, allow your faucet to run until you’re sure the water is hot and ready to go.

Hydrogen peroxide is usually better for getting rid of urine smells on hardwood than vinegar. Unlike vinegar, hydrogen peroxide is odorless. This can be advantageous if you have a dog that likes to mark areas with a strong scent. Also, hydrogen is a strong oxidizer that can break down bacterial odors, and it is less likely to remove the finish on hardwood flooring than vinegar. Never mix hydrogen peroxide and vinegar. This creates corrosive and toxic peracetic acid.

The formula for neutralizing skunk smell is one quart of 3% hydrogen peroxide, ¼ cup baking soda, and one to two teaspoons of dish soap. The University of Nebraska says a chemist discovered that this mixture changes the thiols, the chemical compound that causes the odor, into acids that don’t carry a skunk smell, thus eliminating the odor.
