"The Williams Brothers Tree & Lawn Service team were great! My mother had a large dead tree in her back yard that she was worried it could hit the house if it came down in a storm. The crew drove the truck into the fenced dog area, missed the drainspouts, trimmed the tree up, listened to my mother's concerns, etc. They were so professional and friendly. She said the main guy in the bucket who did the tree topping was a 'master' at how he went about it. Very impressed. The other guys that came to help also cleared away any trace of mess, raked, and when they left they shut the farm gate on the dog's fence as well as took the time to replace the log-barricades we use to keep the dogs from crawling under the gate. Super guys, extremely fair price. Was really nice to find a company like them in the area."

A tree growing close to a house can cause problems, but cutting it down isn’t always the best solution. Trees planted close to your home could damage your foundation as their roots grow. In addition, they can drop large branches on your house, make it easier for critters and insects to access your home, and encourage mold growth. But if the tree has been there for a long time, it may not pose a risk to your foundation, and it could be more beneficial—not to mention cheaper—to strategically trim it instead. Some fast-acting products can rot a tree stump in four to six weeks. Keep in mind, these products contain harsh chemicals that may prevent regrowth in the area. Other products, like fertilizer that contains lots of nitrogen, can enhance the process and rot a stump in about a year. (This is compared to the ten years it can take naturally for a stump to rot.)

The best tool to remove stumps is a stump grinder. You can rent one from a home improvement store or hardware store. You must wear protective gear when working with a stump grinder. It can take up to six hours to grind a stump, or you can hire a pro to tackle the job.

The most common alternative is burning the stump first, then dealing with the cinders and ashes. As you can imagine, this option creates fire hazards, especially since roots can burn underground, hidden, for long afterward. That’s why many states and cities have outlawed the use of stump burning entirely. We do not recommend this option as a viable alternative unless you get a permit from the local fire department and practice all safe burning procedures.

Others prefer a more long-term DIY approach of degrading the stump with home mixtures like Epsom salt and vinegar injected directly into it. This may help the stump decay faster, allowing homeowners to dig it out themselves, but it’s still a lengthy process. It usually takes months for a stump to start falling apart with such treatments, and in the meantime, it can be vulnerable to rot, insects, and other problems.

Yes, stumps can and will attract termites. They seek the shelter and food a stump provides. Once the termites find the stump, it’s possible they can spread destruction to nearby trees and homes. For this reason and many others, you’ll want to seriously consider removing any stumps in your yard.
