"Hired Mark to clean dryer vents as we had a clog. He did state that it wasn't installed properly, with parts only held up with installation, and a couple sections come apart. There was a burning smell from my dryer, which never happened before, and he stated I needed to call an appliance repairman for that, but that the vents were fixed and clean from dryer to outside vent. (His website states you will receive before/after pictures, which I wasn't provided.) When my husband came home, he discovered there was good airflow coming from the dryer and no more burning smell (that was from the constant running with no airflow in the vent for the 1 1/2 hrs he was here). We looked in the vent from outside and saw a clogged vent. When I reached out to Mark to ask him to come back out, he canceled the appointment due to car trouble and stated he could come the following Monday. (I'd already been without my dryer for 3 weeks.) I told him about the clogged pipe and he responded by stating it wasn't his fault and that it was clean when he left, implying it was something I did. I hadn't touched the thing since he left. He said it could be because it wasn't installed right to begin with, but it has worked for over 6 years. He said I had to trust him that it was clean when he left. He never even thought to take responsibility for the job done. My husband took down the clogged section, that clearly hadn't been cleaned at all, cleaned it out and now it works perfectly. I sent pictures of the clogged pipe to Mark and he never responded. Not even to say sorry. The thing is, if he would have taken responsibility and not tried to blame the customer or make the number of excuses he did, I would have waited for him to return to finish the job and would have a left a glowing review."

Dryer Vent Cleaning questions, answered by experts

There are a few things you can look out for that indicate it’s time to clean your dryer vent, including the following:

  • It has been a year or more since the last professional cleaning.

  • Your clothes are taking longer to dry than usual.

  • Your clothes smell musty or burnt when they come out of the dryer.

  • You see lint building up around the outside dryer vent cap.

  • Your laundry room is unusually hot.

  • Your dryer is unusually hot to the touch during operation.

  • You notice a kink in or damage to the vent.

Look for some common warning signs regarding a potential blockage when wondering how to check a dryer vent for clogging. If you are suddenly seeing more lint left inside the dryer and in the lint trap, you may have an active blockage. Additionally, if the dryer is taking longer than usual to dry clothing, a clogged vent may be the culprit. If the dryer is turning itself off because of overheating, this is a potentially dangerous sign of a blockage that requires immediate cleaning of the vent. Clogged vents could introduce a fire hazard.

You should not put boric acid into your home’s air vents. While sprinkling boric acid in roach-prone areas is an effective way to get rid of them, it’s not safe to introduce those chemicals into your home’s air system. Instead, put boric acid or diatomaceous earth in a spot that roaches may walk through, infesting them and the rest of the infestation.

While maintaining a clean dryer vent is crucial for your household’s safety, a professional dryer vent cleaning service will do the trick, and replacing the vent isn’t usually necessary. Provided you don’t see any kinks in your vent or damage to the exterior, a cleaning will maintain your home’s safety and will cost you less than a full replacement. You’ll spend an average of $150 on dryer vent cleaning, while a replacement will cost about $225, and both will yield more or less the same result.

The frequency of cleaning your dryer depends on how often you use it. For regular households, it is recommended to clean the lint trap after each load of laundry. Additionally, thorough cleaning of the dryer—lint trap, drum, and exterior—should be done every few months. It's important to pay attention to the vent system as well. Ideally, it should be cleaned at least once a year, or six months if your dryer takes care of huge loads often, or more frequently if you notice reduced drying efficiency.
