Mr. Stewart demonstrated a startling lack of skill and competence throughout. Drywall Errors: Applied excessive mud, causing cracking. Unnecessary Work: Filled holes I didn’t request and didn’t paint over them. Poor Preparation: Neglected taping, causing splatters and spilled stains on my stairs. Tool Incompetence: Struggled with a circular saw, cutting carpet and trim incorrectly. Vinyl is the cheapest gutter material, averaging around $3 per linear foot. They’re more affordable than other materials because they’re easier to install and more lightweight—which, unfortunately, also makes them less durable. Calcium chloride does not do significant damage to gutters when used properly and in moderate amounts. If you use too much too frequently, it could eventually cause corrosion in your gutters. Rock salt will harm your gutters, though.

When connecting a gutter to a downspout, make sure that both have the same outlet capacity. Meaning starting from your gutter and moving downwards, the diameter should match so you have a secure seal. Make sure you’re working downwards when attaching the pipes (for example, the gutter fits inside the downspout) as doing the reverse will cause leaks.

Water should not be dripping behind your gutters. Rain dripping between your gutters and the fascia might indicate that the gutters are misaligned with the fascia board or there are loose screws in the gutters, allowing water to pass through. Start by checking for these issues and make repairs ASAP.

Depending on the quality of the materials and the installation of your home's gutter system, you can expect between 20 and 50 years of service from your gutters. Homeowners who perform, or hire someone to perform, regular maintenance and cleaning of the system will experience the longest lifespan possible from their systems, provided it doesn't sustain damage from storms or other peril.
