Small jobs welcome

I have been working in construction most of my life. I have done full bathroom remodles, install electrial outlets and fans. I have installed bathroom vent fans and put together many home projects for customers. I am taking HVAC classes currently and plan to get licensed soon. Shower installs and faucet installs. I am a disabled Veterian so there are limits on my work, I can lift up to 50 lbs but have to be careful of my back.

"We wanted a handyman to seal the soffit and other places around the roof line to keep pests out. Secondly, we wanted to see about repairing some mortar cracks in the brick facade. They kept pushing the time out to come out for estimate until I could not be home. They said they could give a quote without seeing me since it was all exterior work. The first time they were supposed to come out, they did not come. The next time, the quote over the phone was given as $99 for the first hour and $75 each hour afterwards. Estimated 1.5-2 hours/ Plus $45 in materials =$219. Was told the estimator was really good, and I should not have to pay for more time than estimated. I also asked about taking a check since they were doing a by the hour rate. I was pretty sure she said that would be okay. Next, I got a written estimate for same rate, but now 3 hours of work and $50 of supplies =$299. When asked about this, was told it was 1.5 hours for the soffit work and 1.5 for the mortar/brick work. Okay... The handyman showed up and talked to my husband and myself. Now the price is $600 and he needs half in cash before he can start. He used spray foam to fill the holes and reattach the soffit. It made a big mess. A piece of trim fell off the house and broke. He told us that if my husband could glue it back together, he would come back and put it up on Tuesday. We asked about cleaning up the mess, and he said he would do that Tuesday also. He wanted the rest of the money. Tuesday came and went. I called and was told he told us Wednesday. Wednesday night I received a call to say he would be by Thursday. Thursday, he came back with some more people. He had them start cutting the foam that was sticking out away. Then he says, that is putting holes in it and it would defeat the purpose. We should paint over it instead. Asked if he was going to paint over it, and he said he did not want to. Told me he could not put the trim back up because it might fall back off and hurt someone. He finished cutting off foam from front side of house and cleaned it off the driveway and windows it had dripped on. Scraped it off brick on side, leaving big scratches all over the brick. The front has parts that look like snail slime where he cleaned it with Acetone? In the back and sides, he just scraped it though. The brick mortar appears sealed and looks good. The main reason we had him out though looks terrible. Hopefully, where he was cutting it off in the front is still sealed."

Drywall questions, answered by experts

Installing or repairing plaster on ceilings differs slightly from performing the same motions on a wall. You’ll apply slightly less plaster to lower the overall weight of the ceiling. Wall texturing is common, whereas most ceilings are smooth plaster. Tough coat plaster is strong, meaning you can use less while retaining a solid surface.

Plaster itself has a higher R-value than drywall. However, there are other considerations surrounding plaster and insulation. As a general rule, it's easier to obtain consistency in insulating value and quality when working with drywall rather than plaster. Plaster walls often don't contain any insulation behind the wall covering by design, and careful evaluation is necessary when choosing to add it.

You’ll get better results if you soundproof the whole wall. A hole through which light can pass can also let sound waves in. Acoustical or silicone sealant applied to holes and cracks can block enough sound to make a difference. However, the more layers absorb vibrations and slow or stop sound waves, the less noise you’ll have.

You can put certain types of plaster over other types, but doing so isn't always the best idea. For example, putting a coat of gypsum over lime plaster is possible, but doing so will limit the lime plaster's breathability and potentially affect its performance.

Since cement plaster tends to leave a textured surface, no matter how much you smooth it, some people prefer to use gypsum plaster as a topcoat over cement plaster, creating a smoother surface.

The cost to skim coat drywall is $1.15 to $1.35 per square foot. Most of the cost is labor, for the necessary skills to apply the skim coat with precision using high-quality tools. This is a job better left to the professionals for the best outcomes.
