Using Epsom salt to kill a tree stump will take between six and 12 months. While this method may seem extended, it significantly speeds up the natural stump decomposition process, which can take up to seven years. If you’d like to DIY remove a tree stump and it’s not causing any immediate harm or danger, using Epsom salt to kill it slowly is a viable removal option. 

You must cut into the ground and around the full circumference of the bush stump to keep it from growing back. If you're concerned about the size of the underground roots or are unable to remove them manually, you can also treat the root ball with an herbicide. Speak with a local landscaper about whether the remaining roots will interfere with your garden plans or threaten to bring the plant back to life.

Trees don’t usually grow back after being cut down. Some particularly robust tree species may start sending up new stems from a stump to recover, but those stems won’t become a “tree” like before. Generally, trees don’t recover from being entirely cut down, which is why it’s important to be careful when making a decision. If you leave the root system in place, it takes anywhere from two to seven years for it to run out of nutrients. It is worth noting, however, that the roots stop growing and expanding after cutting down the rest of the tree.
