To slow down the cracking, apply a sealant every two to three years and use sand rather than salt to melt snow or ice. Using salt speeds up the freeze-thaw cycle, which may increase the likelihood of cracking. In most cases, you are good to stamp the concrete one or two hours after you pour it, but perform the thumb test mentioned above. You want the concrete to be dry enough so the stamps don’t sink, but wet enough that the stamps make a successful imprint. In general, this is a tricky question, as it also depends on the weather outside, the time of day, and the size of the poured concrete slab.

The trick to getting a smooth finish when pouring concrete is to smooth the surface of the concrete with a magnesium float. This tool helps bring the finer, smoother aggregate to the surface for a cleaner finish. Don’t overdo the floating process, though, or the slab can become weaker and start to scale.

Whether or not resurfacing concrete is worth it depends on the extent of the damage. If the damage below the top layer of concrete is too extreme, the concrete resurfacing cost may not be worth it, and it’s better to replace it. However, if your concrete has some standard wear and tear, resurfacing can extend its lifespan by adding a protective layer that shields it from future damage—without the cost of replacing the entire slab.
