"Design consultant Brian Laird was very personable and explained every aspect of the tub-to-shower conversion in an easy-to-understand manner. He answered all our questions thoroughly. Installers Colton S. and Coltrin arrived at the scheduled time and were very professional as they worked. They were very careful of our property and made sure everything cleaned before leaving. The job was finished in about 8 hours. The completed project is beautiful. I would recommend this company."

"My wife and I recently bought an early 1900s home and are in the process of restoring and renovating it. One of our first projects was to modernize the bathroom as it lacked a shower and was in serious need of updating. We found Dan through Angie’s List and given his high marks we called him in for an estimate. For this project we wanted to move the tub (to bring things up to code), add a showerhead, lay a new tile floor and wainscot, redo the plaster on the walls and ceilings, update the electrical, add a bathroom fan, and put in a heated floor. My wife and I did the demo and bought all the lighting fixtures, tile, grout, plumbing fixtures, and electrical components. We got six estimates for the plumbing, drywall, and electrical work ranging from over $20k to $4k. Four of the estimates were in the $8-5k range, with Dan right in that price range. We liked Dan from the start and we appreciated his detailed estimate, so we asked for references and photographs from some of his previous bathroom jobs. He promptly provided photos and references’ phone numbers. All of his references gave him high praise. What really sold us were photos of his previous bathroom jobs; very high quality, professional tile work. We weren’t disappointed. Dan and his plumbing and electrical sub-contractors started their work promptly. We really liked his plumbing sub-contractor, Greg (from Hungry Trout Plumbing), and his quality work. The electrical subs were average. Dan hung the drywall and did the tile work. Our old house is crooked in just about every direction and Dan took great care furring the wall and making the walls straight and the room square. He also worked diligently to level the floor before laying the tiles. We used 1 in hexagonal tiles on the floor and Dan did a commendable job getting the many grout lines even while incorporating the “random” dot pattern we wanted. On the walls, we used 4x4 tiles and Dan was masterful at keeping the many grout lines perfectly straight along long stretches. His tile work is definitely high quality. Further, his presence was always welcome – he is an honest, hard-worker who was pleasant to have around. All in all, we are very happy with Dan’s work and love our bathroom. We would use Dan again on a major project."

"Getting a walk in tub is expensive no matter who you use. My experience thus far is with installation only and I must say my install went great. It has been over a month and no issues with my tub so I cannot comment on repair process with American Standard."

"Wes was very knowledgeable and was able to diagnose the problem with my water heater. We went through my options and Wes educated me along the way to help me make the decision on what I should do. He even showed me what was wrong so I knew I could trust him. Iâ ve already scheduled Plumbing and Company to come back and install a new vanity sink in my bathroom. Glad to have found a plumber I can trust."

"I hired Cransten to remodel my bathroom. It was getting old and in need of an update. They came in, replaced the floor, built a shower pan, and laid custom tile around my shower. I was impressed with how friendly and professional they were. I would definitely hire them again!"

"This is a preliminary rating. We met with Tim Wagaman to discuss enlarging our shower, installing new flooring, vanity and cabinets. And removing a jetted tub. Tim was very professional, friendly and very knowledgeable. He drew everything up and had a cost for us right away. We signed the order so we'll give another review when the work is done. We're excited to get this started."

Tub Shower Conversion questions, answered by experts

There are many benefits of converting a tub to a walk-in shower, including:

  • Increasing home value (if there’s another tub in the house)

  • Taking up less space and improving bathroom space flow

  • Making bathrooms look larger

  • Improving home safety by removing a major trip-and-fall hazard

  • Easing showering for those who benefit from more accessibility

  • Saving money on water bills

Most modern showers have a prefabricated base made from fiberglass or plastic, such as acrylic or polyurethane. Nonetheless, concrete mortar is still the traditional, go-to base for a custom walk-in shower.

You’ll need to add a waterproofing liner or membrane between the layers of mortar to keep moisture out. From there, you can top it with whatever type of tile you like to create a spa-like custom look. Be sure to include these considerations in your budget for the cost of a walk-in shower.

Adding a shower to a half bath transforms it into a three-quarter bath. Compared to converting a half bath into a full bath, this type of conversion is a more affordable way to add functionality and accessibility. This project can add around 5% to 6% to the value of your home, especially if you only have one full bathroom or your only shower is on an upper level. This is a common upgrade for a ground floor when homeowners are hoping to age in place.

The diverter valve in your bathtub is responsible for diverting water between your tub spout and your shower head. If water comes out of both at the same time, you have a faulty diverter valve. You can have a plumber replace this for you, or you can replace it yourself if you have some experience working with plumbing fixtures.

While a custom shower costs more and is trickier to install than a prefabricated type, tailoring the layout is particularly useful in small bathrooms with limited space and offers complete design freedom. You can build a shower bench for a family member with limited mobility or a shower niche (built-in, ingressed shelves) to hold clutter and act as a focal point.
