"I cannot say enough good things about Red Butte Construction. The owner, Bill, and I got off to a great start as we are both named Bill. Joking aside, it was rapidly evident that he understood what needed to happen and how the best way to accomplish our goals were. Not only was he knowledgeable about the ins and outs of navigating the permitting system, it was evident that he knew construction as well. Bill runs a very tight ship and does not like to fall off schedule. There were many weekends and holidays that I would stop by the house only to find him working on a project in order to maintain schedule. I would have to say that most of the delays were, in fact, caused by my wife and I failing to make design decisions in a timely fashion. Bill was also able to help us find various reputable vendors in order to pick out finishes and other items. As the project progressed, Bill also came up with many little designs within the house to make the space more live-able. The loan that I acquired was a little strange and confusing, however, Bill showed an amazing amount of patience working through the process and with the different inspections. Finally, as a true testament to his character, I can still call Bill months after our project is done and he quickly gets back to me. I would absolutely recommend him and will use him for future projects."

"I've hired this company twice now and they do a good job. First project was replacing some old boards on three sheds we have. They did the project to our specs, know how to do carpentry and finished the work per expectations. The second project was repairing our sliding glass door. The movable door started to be hard to move. Jason took the door out, laid it gently on our sturdy patio table and went to work. Now the door slides great and should last until we move out to the retirement home."

"Very professional, best price for the job, had many other quotes and they wanted to overcharge so much and did not listen to me as well as these guys did. End results are amazing, would recommend to anyone wanting updated inside doors or doors repaired."

"Parker was awesome! I hired him for a dryer repair, and I admit I was a little leery because I've not lucked out with hiring good contractors in the past. He is professional, personable, highly intelligent in figuring things out, and makes sure you are happy and satisfied with the job before he leaves. He even texted me to give me a heads-up when he was headed my way for the appointment. He is a lot more reasonable than hiring an appliance-specific repair man. He tore my dryer apart and had it figured out within an hour for the drum to start spinning again. He also is great about guaranteeing the quality of work he has done. Example: After he fixed my dryer, I discovered it was not heating and only drying with cold air when doing a batch that evening. He came back the following day and found there was one resistor not plugged in tight. He had it fixed within a matter of minutes and did not charge me anything to come back out again and fix it. I highly recommend him, and I will hire him again in the future."

"Utah Flooring & Design just completed a sand and finish job for me. I am very pleased. Jack was my estimator and did a good job creating a competitive bid. Jesse and Steve were my installers. They were dependable and professional. Tara followed up with me regarding my project. I've already reached out to them to bid on another job!"

"Best contractor I have ever dealt with on a personal home project. Fast, courteous, honest, polite and informative. Kelly and his crew did exactly what they said they were going to do for the price they quoted me. I have a 2700 square foot basement that they completely framed for me. I offered them to my house, but they came and went every time through a basement window. They were always on time and always responded to my calls and texts. I will definitely rehire Kelly and his crew again if needed."

Customers say: Quick response

"We needed some new cabinets for our kitchen and laundry room. Cody came out and measured, and also gave us sample pieces to show the colors that we had asked for. Cody then gave us a price and timeframe, which was perfect with our requirements. Cody kept us informed throughout the project. The install went super smooth, and the cabinets could not be any more perfect. The quality is amazing. We had some inserts installed in one set of the cabinets afterward, and the insert company even commented on the outstanding quality of the cabinets. If I ever need more cabinets built, I know who I will go to first."

Woodworking questions, answered by experts

If you don’t have a power saw with a blade where you can adjust the angle, you could use a miter box and hand saw to make the cuts. The miter box contains wide slots to support the piece of baseboard and other narrow slots to accommodate the blade of the hand saw. However, it’s tough to make non-standard cuts beyond 30 or 45 degrees when using a miter box.

There are two ways you can cut trim for doorways: with a miter saw or a table saw. Mitered joints need a 45-degree angle. If you’re unfamiliar with a miter saw, you might want to consider buying extra trim pieces or choosing butted joints instead. One wrong cut, and you’ll need to power up the saw again with a new piece.

Butted joints—also called shaker style—don’t need a 45-degree angle. Instead, your side pieces attach perpendicularly to the header trim and only require a straight cut.

Carpenters are trained to take on a wide range of home projects. You can hire a carpenter to do framing, roofing, build custom furniture, and make significant upgrades to your home. General carpenters are usually able to handle most jobs. However, you may also choose to hire a carpenter who specializes in a specific type of carpentry.

You don’t need a cutting board. In fact, cutting is the original purpose of butcher block countertops. That said, wood is porous and can harbor germs. You’ll need to clean your countertop thoroughly after use. Knives can also scratch the surface. This adds to the patina of the wood, but not everyone likes the look—in which case, you may want to use a cutting board.

While you may have heard people use millwork and carpentry interchangeably, they aren’t the same. Millwork is a type of carpentry, which means that carpentry isn’t always millwork. You can tell millwork apart from other types of carpentry because it’s manufactured at a mill. Notably, casework is also confused with millwork. Casework is different because it refers to boxes like cabinets and bookshelves.
