"Our gate was dragging on the driveway and eventually was stuck open.  We contacted Alex at Sigma for a quote to either fix or replace the gate.  He suggested we repair it, which wound up being about half the cost of a new equivalent gate.

The service and workmanship from Alex and his crew at Sigma was very good: they did what they said and went the extra mile to make sure we were happy with it. They spent quite a lot of time troubleshooting the original issues we had with the gate, including the fact it would randomly blow fuses and become inoperable.

I was particularly impressed that they preferred to troubleshoot the controller board issues rather than just replace it; before replacement they wanted to make absolutely sure it was necessary.

I mostly communicated with Sigma via emails to Alex.  He described the work they did very thoroughly and kept us up to date on the work progress.

One negative though is they must be very busy.  They aren't the quickest as getting back in touch and on two occasions didn't turn up when they said they would.  Those occasions were for hanging the screening on the gate, so we weren't too bothered.  However, they were very responsive when my wife had an issue with the gate opening (before the fuse problem was fixed) and was stuck in the driveway.  They were over there fixing it in an hour or so.  And they removed, painted, and rehanged the gate promptly.

So for routine work, you will need some patience but it is well worth it in the end.   I highly recommend them."

"Remodeling Max is a class act. From the minute you sit down in their offices until they leave your house on the last day, Remodeling Max is an extremely professional and productive contractor. They have an excellent visualization software program which will show you the finished look. This image is almost 100% accurate when comparing to the completed job. From my experience with contractors, Remodeling Max is vastly superior. They arrive on time, excellent "quiet" workers. Clean up every night. They complete on schedule for the price agreed to. I would not contemplate using anyone else."

Welding questions, answered by experts

The cost to weld aluminum averages about $14 to $22 per pound. The type of metal factors into the overall cost of any welding project due to the cost of the materials and the expertise required to work with it. Some of the most common metals used by welders include:

  • Magnesium alloy: $7–$16 per pound

  • Low-carbon steel: $11–$12 per pound

  • Stainless steel: $13–$15 per pound

  • Copper/brass: $24–$29 per pound

  • Cast iron: $38–$79 per pound

  • Titanium: $60–$85 per pound

Some welding projects, such as repairing pipes or fences, require travel, whereas others, like furniture repair, do not necessarily require the welder to come to you. Travel and overhead factor into the overall cost of your welding project. Some of the most common welding projects include:

  • Metal furniture repair: $35–$100

  • Pipe repair: $200–$1,000

  • Small gates: $550–$750

  • Fencing: $1,200–$1,800

  • Fabricated sheet metal welding: $750–$2,500

The best thing to cut metal pipe is a durable pipe cutter that is made for metal. You may want to measure the diameter of the pipes before purchasing a pipe cutter to ensure it will be able to cut your metal pipes. Opt for a heavy-duty option to cut through metal like steel or cast iron.

You should not do your own welding unless you have the proper training and experience. Most home electrical systems can only handle MIG welding, which creates weaker bonds than TIG welding and won’t work on certain metals or metal thicknesses. Both welding forms usually require the use of shielding gas, which can be dangerous to store at home. Additionally, welding machines create temperatures of over 3,000 degrees, and the sparks can blind you if you don’t have the proper equipment. As such, it’s usually better to hire a professional welder for your welding projects.

There are a few things you can ask welders before you hire them to get an idea of their experience and ability levels:

  • Are you licensed and certified?

  • How long have you been in the welding business?

  • Do you commonly do the type of welding I need?

  • Do you offer any kind of warranty for your work?

  • Do you charge by the hour or by the project?

  • How long do you expect my welding project to take?

  • What steps do you take to minimize errors in your work?
