"I hired Dylan to put on a drive way into my place. He came out to my location and wanted to know what I wanted. He suggested a crushed limestone as base and topped with crushed asphalt. They completed the job and looked awesome. I had him complete a circle drive of same material. Very pleased with my new road. Since the road, they have built me a leveled pad for patio, one for building and pad for my new double-wide."

Waterproofing concrete is essential to protect it from water infiltration, which can lead to deterioration and structural issues. One common technique involves applying a waterproof coating, like a liquid membrane, to the concrete surface. These coatings form a protective barrier, preventing water from seeping in. Alternatively, crystalline waterproofing products can be added to the concrete mix before pouring; they react with water to form crystals that fill capillary pores, providing long-lasting protection. Sealants, particularly silicone or polyurethane-based, are another option, often used on exterior surfaces. Properly waterproofing concrete extends its lifespan, preventing cracks, freeze-thaw damage, and mold growth. It’s particularly beneficial for basements, retaining walls, and outdoor concrete installations exposed to moisture, ensuring durability and maintaining structural integrity over time.

Paving Services questions, answered by experts

Many asphalt companies have experience with tar and chip paving, but not all. The process is unique enough—and not incredibly common enough—that you may have to look around for a tar and chip specialist. However, speaking with a driveway company is a great place to start, especially if they have experience with multiple materials.

The most common alternatives to a gravel driveway are concrete, asphalt, brick, and permeable pavers. Concrete and asphalt are the two more affordable alternatives, while the intricate design options of brick and permeable pavers make installation significantly more expensive. Similar to gravel, concrete isn’t the best driveway material for cold weather, as frigid temperatures can cause it to crack. Alternatively, asphalt is sensitive to heat, and driveways can become soft in areas with high temperatures and sun exposure. While brick and permeable pavers give homeowners curb appeal, the latter offers the added functionality of preventing flooding and reducing runoff water.

An ideal driveway gradient is between 2% and 5%. Anything lower than 1% or higher than 15% can cause problems for your car or property. A driveway with less than a 1% slope increases your likelihood of flooding and water damage, while a driveway with a 15% grade or higher can be too steep for safe traveling.

You can expect your asphalt pavement to last anywhere from 20 to 30 years, or 25 years on average. The life expectancy of your asphalt driveway depends on the climate, the amount of traffic, and how well you maintain it. While you can’t necessarily control some of these factors, you can control the amount of maintenance effort you put into your driveway.

To prevent your asphalt from deteriorating prematurely, you should follow a good maintenance routine involving regular cleaning, reparation work, and resealing.

Pavers are a type of permeable hardscape that can be used for driveways, patios, walkways, and other landscaping features. Unlike poured concrete or asphalt, pavers typically have a layer of gravel underneath to prevent water runoff from damaging your property—though you can also lay pavers on grass. Because pavers are installed piece by piece, you can customize a one-of-a-kind hardscape that best suits your aesthetics, boosting your curb appeal along the way.
