"Gran removed two 1950s windows and installed 2 new beautiful energy efficient ones. He also installed a brand new gorgeous door where a window once was. This man has a great eye! We hired him because he caught an imperfection while measuring that many others never saw. One of those 1950s windows was slightly crooked. To the untrained eye it was not visible. We knew it was there and waited for someone to come along that saw it without being told. Gran was that man! He is honest and hardworking! He maintained a clean job site. He put down tarps and vacuumed and wiped down areas after he completed the job. He is respectful and friendly. He and employees maintained social distancing and wore masks when required. Communication was big! Open honest communication throughout the process. From the moment we made the deal to proceed until the last wipe down. Absolute great joy! Making plans to hire him again to replace three 1950s hall doors and replace all the original trim in my home. Hire this company and you will be happy!"

Doors questions, answered by experts

Outswing doors are more popular for exterior doors as they offer more room for moving items in and out of a home. And because the hinges are on the outside of the door, they’re more secure against potential break-ins. But, outswing doors are more susceptible to the elements and are more expensive. Comparing inswing vs. outswing doors depends on your budget, needs, and overall preference.

Interior and exterior door openings are typically 80 inches high, with openings 29¼ inches wide for interior doors and 35 inches wide for exterior doors. If your couch is smaller than these measurements, it should fit through the door frame.

You might be able to turn a normal door into a fire-rated door, but you’re better off purchasing one that meets all NFPA 80 standards. If you want to DIY a normal door into a fire door, you’ll need a self-adhesive intumescent seal, metal hinges, fire-resistant glazing, and a self-closing device, but you’re always better off buying a certified fire door.

A door frame is typically 2 to 2.5 inches wider than the door. This additional space accommodates the door jamb and hinges and allows for necessary installation adjustments. For example, if the door is 30 inches wide, the rough opening should be 32 to 32.5 inches wide to ensure a proper fit and smooth operation.

Your front door should only need replacing every 20 to 40 years, depending on the material and level of wear and tear. Sometimes a door will need replacing sooner due to extreme weather conditions, like a hurricane or storm. In other cases, you may want to upgrade your door to add some upgraded curb appeal—especially when prepping your home for sale.
