Larry and Wynell have owned Bratcher's Nursery & Landscaping just Northeast of Blossom, TX since our company opened its doors in 1978. We’ve grown from one little greenhouse, to over 17, and 2 large growing fields. In 1984 we launched our landscaping services and have since been landscaping homes and businesses all over Northeast Texas and Southeast Oklahoma.

Mulch and Topsoil questions, answered by experts

Yes, you can put soil on top of existing grass to level small areas. This is helpful for filling in small divots or leveling out minor dips in your yard that collect rainwater. However, this isn’t a good option if you need to regrade your entire lawn. It’s better to have a professional excavate some of the dirt first so that the level of the lawn doesn’t rise too high.

Although it’s not required to lay anything under mulch, it can help to put landscape fabric or plastic weed barrier down and lay mulch on top. The barrier helps keep weeds from growing up through your mulch. It also helps keep rodents and insects from burrowing into the ground underneath.

The number of bags of topsoil you need depends on the depth you’re filling. The average topsoil is sold in a roughly forty-pound bag, covering 12 square feet at a one-inch depth. Since topsoil is by nature the uppermost layer of soil, you can bet on only needing to fill about 4 to 8 inches of soil depth with it.

It can be tedious and time-consuming to install your own mulch and determine the ideal amount. A professional can help you ensure the right thickness and save you a lot of time and headaches.

Costs depend on waste volume, service frequency, and additional options like bulk pickups.
