The price was competitive for what they did. However, the person that came out and talked to us about what we wanted done obviously did not listen and he did not write it down. They did send me a document outlining what they were going to do and since I don't know anything about landscaping, I did not check it carefully enough or realize that I was making some assumptions about what was going to be done. That much was my fault. When they came to mark out the dimensions of the patio for excavating the lawn, we realized that they were not planning to do everything that we had said we wanted done. At that point I doublechecked the document and measured the dimensions and sure enough, they had given me a quote for less than what we had asked for. I did a little quick research and decided that the price was probably competitive so I told them to go ahead.
The man that headed up the actual installation was different than the person who came out and talked to us originally. He was very nice and the patio was installed in a timely manner. However, the original person had said that there would be a seal-coat put on the patio, and the man installing the patio said that was not included in the estimate. (Yes, now I know to go over the materials in the estimate with a fine-tooth comb). Also, they put in the flower bed without any sort of edging to keep the mulch contained and off the grass. The man who was head of the installation did, on my request, add a piece of flexible plastic edging for no charge, due to my complaint that I had not been listened to by the original contact person.
Overall, I think that they gave me a competitive price for what they did and the person doing the installation did his best to make up for the disappointments caused by the original person not listening or writing down what we wanted. However, I do think that a landscaper has not only the responsibility to listen carefully and write it down, but also to ask detailed questions such as and quot;edging is not included, are you going to want that?,and quot; and also if he suggests something like the seal-coat, to include it in the estimate.
The next time I have a landscaping project, I will be looking for somebody who will listen carefully, write it down, ask us plenty of questions about our wants and needs, and be careful to include all details in the estimate. Then we will know exactly what it will cost to get exactly what we want, and if we don't want to spend more, then at least we won't be expecting more from the landscaper.
