"In late July, I hired JNR Landscaping through Angie s List for backyard upgrades. After providing pictures and discussing the project, I paid a deposit. Initially, work progressed smoothly as they cleared the area, laid tarp, and added gravel. However, the gravel was not the light color we had requested. I offered to cover the cost for an additional layer of white stone. The pavers were also poorly installed, loose, and not packed with sand. I met with the contractor, Ross, in late August to address these issues. We discussed changes, including larger pavers and the white stone layer. After a lengthy and productive meeting, Ross assured me he would send a revised estimate, but I didn t hear back by September 6. I followed up with Ross and I was sent directly to voicemail. I received a cryptic text that read forwarded info to my dad. He will be in contact with you Since I had never spoken or had any dealings with his dad, I was not quite sure what this was about. Ross s father called me with an extremely hostile attitude, accusing me of leaving his son in the car and berating me for no apparent reason. He was verbally aggressive, unprofessional, and even threatened to tarnish my reputation if I complained. Ultimately this project was done poorly and it is still incomplete. I have been verbally abused and threatened by the owners of this company and I still need to complete this project. I am now seeking a refund for 100 pavers ($1,200), the spray ($120), and an additional $1,780 to cover labor costs I will incur to hire a new contractor, totaling $3,000."

If you don’t backfill a retaining wall—either at all or adequately enough—the wall won’t drain well, and water will be able to pass through it. Poor drainage will lead to a warped wall or a buildup of hydrostatic pressure, which can eventually collapse your retaining wall. Railroad ties can be good for retaining walls, but it depends on the area. They have a desirable rustic look and are durable. The problem is they’re treated with creosote, a preservative the EPA says poses a risk to humans and wildlife. Over time, the preservative seeps out of the wood and into the ground. Many areas have banned the use of creosote-treated wood on residential properties. If your area does allow it, never use railroad ties near an edible garden or drinking water source. Instead, use wood that’s treated with an EPA-approved preservative or a wood-alternative composite material.

While vinyl is the least costly material for building a retaining wall, the most cost-effective method is to use wood or concrete blocks for a DIY retaining wall under 2 feet tall. Wood is inexpensive but lasts 20 years or more with care. Concrete can cost a little more but is stronger and will last longer with less maintenance.

Poured concrete is likely the cheapest way to build a retaining wall, as this material costs anywhere from $6 to $8 per square foot. The next best budget-friendly option is to use landscaping timbers. These timbers are great for DIY projects, as they don’t require tools to successfully build a retaining wall. Landscape timber costs around $10 to $14 per square foot. Depending on your chosen garden style, you can also go with natural stones or concrete blocks. Natural stones can be expensive if you buy them, but they’re a lot less costly if you can source them from your property.
