"Leah from Auger Plumbing called immediately when I put in a request with Angies List for help. She listened to our problem and suggested that she speak with one of the plumbers and give us a call back with a recommended course of action. Leah followed through and called us back with the plumbers recommendation for something for us to try before incurring the expense to come out. We applied their advice, and, It worked! We are thrilled and grateful for their generous help. It would have been easy for them to come out and charge us $100's of dollars. Auger staff clearly has integrity and were kind and helpful in curing our problem. Thank you!! We will use them next time we have a problem... Margaret"

"Initially, I hired L&P Plumbing t clear a clogged sink for a rental property that I manage. Paul got out to the property quickly, fixed the line, sent photos of his work, and an invoice by the next day. He is honest and his prices are very fair. I was impressed by his work ethic and have since also hired him to replace a water heater at another property and repair misc. leaks/drains. My tenants also have expressed that they like Paul. I will continue to use him and I am grateful to have found him"

"James is the best plumber I’ve had the pleasure of hiring. I found a leak at my manifold outside my home and he not only repaired for a fair price, but explained why it happened and replaced it better than before. He also recently was willing to answer questions I had on a Sunday when I was testing to see if I had any new leaks and walked me through what my results meant. Very fortunate to find such an honest and trustworthy plumber! Will use in the future!"

Toilets questions, answered by experts

Some older homes have toilets in the basement to combat sewage backups. This type of toilet, also known as a Pittsburgh potty, acted as a safety valve over the incoming sewer line. If a line backed up, it would back up into the toilet because it was the lowest fixture in the home, keeping it out of sight and away from the finished areas of the house.

Basement toilets were also used by workers with messy jobs, like those who worked in coal mines or steel mills. This way, they could clean up and avoid tracking dirt through their home.

Yes, you should caulk a toilet to the floor for several reasons. Bathrooms are constantly wet—and if water splashes out of your shower and collects on your floor, you don’t want it seeping underneath your toilet, where it could potentially cause damage. Plus, caulk adds stability and helps prevent your toilet from wobbling.

No, your toilet tank should not empty completely when you flush. Although the water level will dip a lot after you flush, it shouldn’t be totally empty. If your tank is empty, you might have issues with your fill valve, float ball, or toilet trip lever. You should check all of your toilet parts to ensure they’re working correctly and make any necessary adjustments.

You can tell if your toilet fill valve is full by removing the lid and taking a look. When you flush the toilet, the float is at the bottom of the tank, the water empties, and the fill valve opens. The float rises to the top as the tank fills again with water. When the float rises to the right level, the fill valve closes; if the valve is too high, your toilet may only partially flush, requiring you to adjust the float.

Even though they’re modern-looking, easier to clean, can be hung at any height, and help save space compared to traditional toilets, wall-hung toilets have some downsides. They’re more expensive than standard toilets, sometimes by a few hundred dollars. They’re also difficult to install and may require major plumbing work to reroute the drain if the previous toilet was a floor-mount model.

This tight fit can make repairs more difficult. You’ll also have to consider where you can hang them and weight limit restrictions, so they may not be the best fit for every home.
