A good subfloor can last 30 years or even longer, depending on the material. OSB should last a bit longer than plywood. However, OSB isn’t the best option for heavy flooring types like ceramic tile or stone. It’s also worth noting that regular moisture exposure will drastically reduce any subfloor's life span.

Squeaky floors don’t always mean structural damage. Usually, it’s caused by friction somewhere inside your floor—whether it’s a loose floorboard or a gap between the subfloor and joists. If there is structural damage, you’ll notice other signs like soft or sagging floors, cracks that go from the wall to the ceiling, and horizontal cracks on your foundation.

When you install laminate flooring, you have to install spacers (also called expansion gaps) along the edges. This space along the edges gives the flooring the room it needs to naturally expand and contract. When you don't have an expansion gap, you can end up with damaged or warped planks. This can lead to uneven flooring, which is unsightly and can cause a trip hazard.

The cost of new flooring materials depends on the type of flooring, its quality, installation method, and additional features. While some options, like solid hardwood flooring, may be more expensive than carpet initially, others, such as vinyl and laminate, offer more budget-friendly alternatives. Ultimately, the overall expense can be influenced by factors like longevity, maintenance requirements, and desired aesthetic, making it essential to consider the long-term value of each material.

For rooms with an even number of feet (10 x 12, for example), you can technically just multiply them together to get the number of square feet in the room (10 feet x 12 feet = 120 sq. ft.). For irregularly shaped rooms or areas that aren’t even square feet, converting to inches will be your best bet for an accurate measurement.
