"I called SETCON to come out & replace/paint an interior door; they also fixed my garage door hardware, my kitchen cabinet so it sits flush, & replaced my light kit in my ceiling fan. This is the first handyman service in my 40 years of adulthood that I would strongly recommend & be loyal to. "Mr. Martinez did a great job cleaning the exterior windows of our two story home. He contacted me promptly, arrived on time both to scope and bid and later to carry out the project. He handled removing and replacing screens with care. The cleaning was thorough, by hand (no power washer) and held to budget. Thanks!"

"The deck had been neglected for a number of years years, but the cleaning and sanding restored the surface nicely. Three coats of stain went on and my only regret was that I wish I had specified a half stain/half clear finish so that the wood grain would be more obvious. Scheduling was a bit touchy with our variable weather but the work went well and clean-up was professional."

"An older home had been neglected for at least 3 years. Magic Touch cleaned up the mess, removed dead plants, removed or trimmed trees too close to the houseand removed an entire Fall's worth of dead leaves. They worked quickly and professionally. We were impressed enough to accept their offer of monthly maintenance."

Deck Cleaning FAQs, answered by experts

Cutting the boards directly is one of the fastest ways to remove deck boards with hidden fasteners. Mark two parallel lines that are one-third of the total measurement on both ends and cut out the centerpiece. Then, remove the end of the board that doesn’t have a fastener. Finally, pry open the fastened side and pull it up to pop out the screw or access the fastener. This also allows you to salvage portions of boards for other projects.

Building codes for deck railings can vary by location, so it's important to consult your local regulations before construction. Generally, a guardrail is required for any deck that is more than 30 inches above the ground.

For residential properties, the standard minimum height for a deck railing is 36 inches. However, some states and municipalities have stricter requirements; for example, California and Washington mandate railings that are at least 42 inches high. Therefore, a 42-inch railing is not considered too high and may be required in your area or chosen voluntarily for additional safety.

In addition to height requirements, codes also specify other safety features, such as the maximum spacing between balusters to ensure they are close enough to prevent a child from squeezing through.

Decks are generally more expensive to build because they require elevating and railings. The difference between decks and patios is that decks are elevated, while patios are usually on the ground level. Plus, decks are usually made of wood and need more maintenance than most patios. However, decks and patios serve the same purpose, providing outdoor space for you to enjoy.

While you can use various materials like sand or even just soil, gravel is widely considered the best option to put under a deck. It provides excellent drainage and is resistant to water, fire, and pests. Gravel also helps anchor the soil to prevent erosion during heavy rain and acts as a built-in weed blocker, reducing regular upkeep. Furthermore, it is simple to spread, available in various textures and tones, and adds a polished look that complements any deck design.

Homeowners should build their floating decks at least 18 inches off the ground. Having it at this height will allow for better airflow underneath and help prevent moisture-related problems like warping or rot. That being said, local guidelines for deck heights may vary depending on where you live.
