I’m Brandon Shaw, owner of SHAW Construction & Remodeling, serving homeowners across North Texas. I’ve spent over a decade in construction, starting in heavy equipment and moving into hands-on residential remodeling, so I understand both the big picture and the small details that make a job last. My company focuses on quality work—whether it’s painting, flooring, drywall, or full interior upgrades—and I treat every home like it’s my own. I believe in doing things right the first time, communicating clearly, and standing behind my work long after the job is done.

Kitchen Remodels: Often called the heart of the home, kitchen remodels are super popular. This can be anything from simple updates like painting cabinets and replacing hardware to a full gut renovation. Popular kitchen updates include installing new countertops (quartz is a big one right now), adding a kitchen island for more prep space and seating, and upgrading appliances. \n• Bathroom Remodels: Bathroom renovations are another common project that can have a big impact. These can range from cosmetic changes like a new vanity and fixtures to a full overhaul that includes re-tiling the shower, installing a new tub, and updating the flooring. \n• Adding Living Space: If you're feeling cramped, there are a few ways to add more living area. A home addition can create a new bedroom, a larger living room, or a home office. Another option is to finish an existing space like a basement or attic. Garage conversions are also becoming more common.

"I have a bit of OCD so I tend to check every tiny corner, spec, you name it - and they met every one of my requirements. We had let the master bath sit for almost 5 years due to extensive water damage because we couldn't find a contractor that understood what we wanted without charging us crazy money. They all kept saying "the best thing for you to do, is just throw a shell over it and cover up the window". Instead U-DIY said "we can give you just what you want and - by the way, would you like to cover up that hideous floor tile (mostly cracked) without having to use a jackhammer?". Uh - hello and thank you! My house will be paid up in about 5 years and U-DIY just upped my home value about $20k. You can't beat that."

"First thing to say, I really liked JC Hill, the contractor. He's just a laid back kind of guy with a good sense of humor and bad knees. Easy to talk to and understood what I wanted done. That's why I hired him.

Secondly, for the most part I like the finished product a lot. They were very fast. The remodel only took about 3 weeks total once they got started, which was way faster than I imagined it would take.

Now, the problems. Some things were done badly. The people he had working for him, while very nice, didn't know how to work with wood. Any wood they finished or refinished was badly done. I had them touch up some interior doors and they look worse now than they did before.  I also had them replace the bifold doors leading into the laundry area and they installed doors that were and look cheap.  In the course of the remodel new baseboards had to be installed. I didn't realize until after they were all installed that the new ones aren't even wood. They're some kind of pressboard. The day after they left I was hanging a key caddy on the wall and it fell and put a hole in the baseboard. I thought what? and then picked up the piece that fell out and it was just like cardboard. I was stunned. The light fixture in the kitchen was hung at least 6 to 12 inches too high. It looks ridiculous. Several pieces of the backsplash tile on the stove side of the kitchen are cracked. Why would they install cracked tile? The backsplash tile on the sink side of the kitchen looks like a child installed it. Some tiles stick out and some are sunk in. No smoothness to the surface at all. When I pointed it out to the sub, he said he'd fix it and the result was even worse. The ceiling in the back hall and the laundry area, while painted, looks terrible. Again, I think a child could have done a better job and they put the old dirty a/c vent back up without even painting it. I had to go around and do a lot of the touch up painting myself, which I didn't mind so much but sheesh.

I called JC and he came out and looked at the problems. He just shook his head when he saw the backsplash area but said it couldn't be fixed. The tiles are all set. (I don't believe it can't be fixed. It would just be a major, expensive fix and he doesn't want to do it.) He said he'd fix the staining and varnishing of the doors, replace the baseboards with wood and have the light fixture lowered. He said he'd have another of his contractors call me and the work shouldn't take more than a day. Time went by and no call. I called JC again and he told me the guy had been really busy on another job but that he was finishing up and would call me. Time went by and again no call. So I called JC again and again he came up with some excuse but for sure now the guy would call and come out. More time went by. We're talking not days here, but weeks. This is now at least 4 weeks out from when he was here and said he'd have it fixed. I called him a 4th time and this time his connection was so bad I couldn't understand him. I gave up. I told him I wouldn't call again. So, now I'm stuck with living with an expensive remodel that looks bad and needs fixing or hiring someone else to fix things I already paid JC for.

If you hire him, do NOT give him his final payment until at least a week or two after the final work is done. This will give you time to really look things over and make sure they were done correctly and to your satisfaction. Afterall, you're paying for it.

All the above ratings would have been all A's and B's if he had just had things done correctly or fixed the problems.

UPDATE 9/17/14:

About two weeks after I made this post, JC called me and told me he had been out of the country but he was back now and he had a subcontractor free who could come and help fix things. The guy and his assistant came (nice guys btw) and worked for about two weeks on fixing things. They lowered the light in the kitchen to the proper height, they replaced the baseboards with actual wooden ones, they did their best fixing the backsplash problem. (It's very difficult to replace individual tiles in a backsplash but they did really a pretty good job). The doors leading from the kitchen to the garage and from the kitchen to a bedroom were also replaced (at my expense) as well as the bifold door in front of the laundry area.

I would rate the fact that after all this time someone did come and try to fix things as an "A" rating. However, all the above problems did happen and people should be aware of them and because of them I'm leaving the above ratings as I first had them.

Two more things to say: First everyone who worked for this company that I had any contact with were really nice people. Easy to talk to and easy to have in your home. Secondly, read your contract. If there is something you don't understand or seems like a gray area, talk it out with JC and have the contract written in a way that you both understand exactly what each point means. He was very good to me on that and I'm glad I did because there were a few areas that would have been problematic if I hadn't had it clarified."

"I had a fantastic experience with Robert and his team! They completed a partial kitchen remodel and built a beautiful custom bookshelf for me. The craftsmanship was top-notch, communication was clear and consistent, and their pricing was fair. It’s hard to find a team this trustworthy—highly recommend!"

"We've done a lot of remodeling, and this was one of the smoothest projects we've ever experienced. Richard Varga is wonderful to work with . . . he stays on top of the work to be done, is calm and professional, has great problem solving abilities and a good eye for what will and won't look good. He was attentive throughout, helpful with selection of cabinets through to the end. He was responsive to my texts and calls and quick to address any questions or concerns. His people left the work area clean at the end of each day. Jose, the lead carpenter, is a gem! Projects this big will have their 'hiccups', but for us, they were minor, and things were resolved quickly. Very pleased with the outcome!"

FAQs for basement remodel projects in Krum, TX

Unless you have extensive experience in construction work, remodeling a basement is best left to a professional. There are several tasks associated with this project that require exact precision, including:

  • Replacing insulation

  • Replacing carpet or other flooring

  • Adding heating and cooling

  • Adjusting or adding walls and doors

  • Altering or adding plumbing elements

If any of these elements is done incorrectly, it could severely impact the quality of your basement remodel and be dangerous. Changing a basement often comes with code safety requirements, like egress windows and proper ventilation. Therefore, leaving it up to a professional is often the best decision.

The cost to finish a basement is $18,400 for the average homeowner. However, this cost could be as little as $2,800 or as much as $34,500, depending on the basement size and the materials needed. If your basement is already outfitted with electrical and plumbing, expect the cost to fall on the lower end.

For example, the drywall cost for this project averages around $1,750, but other features, like hiring a plumber, cost between $45 and $200 per hour.

The cost to remodel a basement is between $12,100 and $33,400 for the average homeowner. The price you pay can be as little as $3,500 or as much as $50,200, depending on the size and condition of your basement and the type of remodel you're doing.

If you're doing a simple project like adding a home office to your basement, you can expect to pay anywhere from $500 to $3,000. However, if you're adding a bathroom, which is an extensive project, you can expect to pay between $6,600 to $16,500.

Since DIYing a basement remodel isn't typically advised, there are some ways that you can still save money on this project without putting yourself in danger. Some ways to save money on a basement remodel include:

  • Painting walls yourself versus including in the cost of the remodel

  • Installing light fixtures yourself

  • Choosing prefabricated fixtures, like cabinets, over custom ones

  • Choosing a budget-friendly flooring option, like laminate or vinyl flooring, and add rugs where necessary

Although homeowners often use the terms basement remodeling and basement finishing interchangeably, they are quite different terms.

Finishing a basement is the process of taking a basement space that is not habitable and adding elements to make it usable. This includes adding plumbing, flooring, and insulation.

Remodeling a basement means taking an already existing finished basement and changing it, often by adding or removing walls, adding plumbing, or changing the existing flooring.
