"Date: March, 2016. Estimate: $300-$500. Actual Cost: $665. Work performed: Installed 2 light fixtures in garage, removed, purchased, installed the outside door fixture, completely checked the circuit breaker box for dishwasher issue & changed out circuit breakers to help narrow down the dishwasher issue. Heck, they even checked my battery operated drill to help me figure out if the problem was the charger or batter(s). Prepared for the $500 charge, but when the final bill came in, I paid it - gladly. Why? Because this company did not take advantage of me. I may have been behind the actual final cost for the hourly pay/benefit scale for a electrician and helper; but, I was pretty close when I finally figured in one electrician & one helper. The guys were here for 3/4 of the work day (minus lunch break) and they were thoughtful, careful, and really addressed any and all of my electrical concerns. And, to boot, both handled my big dogs wonderfully. I can honestly say, after building one house in Midland County & remodeling my current home in the city, Unity Electric is probably the only contractor or subcontractor I would not have taken to court - and I did win. I wish there were more reliable and honest contracts for home repair as this company."

Generator Install questions, answered by experts

To reduce AC startup power for a whole-house generator, install a soft start kit or hard start capacitor, which lowers the initial surge by gradually ramping up the compressor. Using a smart load manager can also help by staggering startup loads, preventing a system overload and future costly repairs.

Portable generators provide backup power for essential appliances during outages and are easy to relocate.

Energy output depends on turbine size, average wind speed at your site, and system efficiency. A 5 kW turbine in a good wind location can generate 8,000 to 12,000 kilowatt-hours per year, which may cover a large portion of an average home’s needs. Accurate output estimates require a professional wind assessment and a review of your household’s energy usage patterns.

Yes. You can connect your home back-up battery to a generator with its designated charger. Be sure that the output of the generator matches the input requirements for the battery for best results.

The amount of time a standby generator can run continuously is around 3,000 hours on average. However, standby generators can generally run indefinitely as long as they have a continuous fuel supply. Generators hooked up to a home’s natural gas supply are the best option for extended usage, as these won’t rely on a finite fuel supply based on how much you have in storage. Generators running on liquid propane or diesel won’t last as long, as these require fuel storage and regular refueling to stay running.
