While you technically can add a roof over shakes or shingles, it’s not a good idea. Roofing over existing roofing creates a moisture barrier underneath the new roof and since the trapped material is wood, you can expect a moisture problem. You should have an overhang of at least 1/2-inch, though, as anything shorter can increase the risk of moisture getting blown under the shingles and damaging your roof deck or fascia.

Whether homeowner’s insurance covers repairs for a leaking roof depends on the cause of the leak. For example, it typically covers the leak in the case of a sudden or accidental event (think: a tree falling on your roof during a storm). However, if the leak starts because you haven’t kept up on the maintenance or your roof is reaching the end of its life span, then insurance usually does not cover it.

You should avoid choosing a metal roof if your home has a weak structural support system, as metal roofs can be heavier than roofs made of other materials. If you're in a region prone to frequent hailstorms or high winds, you also need to be aware that denting may occur.
