The best type of temporary fencing depends on its intended purpose. For example, if you need it for added security, to ensure the safety of children and animals, or to keep pests out of a garden, the ideal material will differ. For simply warning people away from a construction project, plastic orange fencing may be sufficient. Barricade fencing is a good choice for blocking off small areas. If you need to protect an area from trespassing, theft, or vandalism, more robust security fencing is necessary. Once you understand the primary function, you can select the most durable and cost-effective material for your specific project and yard size.

There are pros and cons to vinyl fencing. The drawbacks are that it can be expensive up front compared to options like chain-link fencing and that it’s vulnerable to fading. The material is difficult to repair without replacing entire panels or the whole fence, and you can’t paint over vinyl to change the color. However, this material is impressively durable and easy to maintain, making it a good choice for many homes.

In the vast majority of cases, chain-link fences are less expensive than wood fences. Installing a wood fence costs anywhere from 20% to 30% more than a chain-link fence, or an average of $3,100, whereas a similarly sized chain-link fence will average around $2,400. Even with add-ons and additional protective finishes, a chain-link fence is very likely to cost you less than a wood fence. The only exception would be a split rail wood fence, which can cost about half the price of a chain-link fence or less.

Removing fence posts that are set in concrete is something you can't do by hand. You will need an excavator, a strong post-puller, or a jackhammer. If you plan on recycling the concrete base, you may be able to cut the post out with a jackhammer and then set the new post in the existing base. However, it's usually better to remove both the fence post and concrete together. Due to the weight of concrete, you will need a hydraulic removal tool.

There are two things you can do to make a fence replacement easier—but keep in mind that easier doesn’t mean better. First, you can use a jack or some other type of machinery to pull the post out of the ground. If that’s not available, a digging bar can help.

Second, you can backfill the hole with gravel rather than creating a concrete footing. Keep in mind, gravel is less secure. You should only use it if you’re installing a lightweight fence or have heavier, clay soil.
