"3/14/2020 My elderly parents live with me - both have health issues. We had an emergency where water was spewing from a pump outside. Even though it was Sunday, Farrell Plumbing had someone come over and were quick to fix the problem. I was really appreciative of their response, professionalism and their fair price. If you’ve accessed the bolts and nuts that hold your toilet seat in place and can’t unscrew them, it’s possible that they were overtightened or that the material corroded over time, making it impossible to unscrew. Lay down masking tape around the mounting bracket and then use the tape as a surface to lay a hack saw blade. Move slowly to cut through the bracket and bolt, being careful not to damage the porcelain in the process.

Your toilet handle might not come back up if the nut is loose or the bolt threads are stripped. Try to tighten the mounting nut and wrap plumber’s tape around the handle bolt to fix stripped threads. It’s possible the handle was improperly installed. If that’s the case, you can use the instructions above to correct the handle’s position. 

You’ll likely pay between $300 and $450 to unclog your toilet with Roto-Rooter. However, the price could change depending on if the clog has caused a lot of damage, which your plumbing pro will want to inspect during your service appointment. Keep in mind that you won’t get a quote from Roto-Rooter over the phone. They have to send a pro out for an in-person cost estimate. You can also attempt to snake your own clog for a lot less, and simple drain snakes cost no more than $50.

Usually it’s fine to leave a toilet clogged overnight, as long as it’s not close to overflowing. In some cases, the extra time may give the clog time to work itself out. For example, if it’s caused by an excess of toilet paper, letting it sit could result in the clog dissolving and you may be able to simply flush it away by the time you wake up.
