"We are new to the area and went to home advisor for a carpentry recommendation as our front porch needed a makeover. Brand and Jen called immediately, ready to schedule an estimate. The estimate was fair AND included some great suggestions. On hire, they showed up when they committed to, worked non-stop and were polite as can be. The project finished on-time and on-budget and was immaculate. Great skills and attention to detail. We will definitely be hiring them for future projects!"

"I think they treated the wrong lawn. The note they sent me via text message referenced trees and shrubs in my yard, I have none. They also did not leave a yard marker showing they had been there. Otherwise, this would have been a 5 star review."

"Darrell showed up fairly soon after I requested and we agreed to the next day, if it didn't rain. It did lightly rain in the morning, and I thought possibly he might come in the afternoon. He didn't, so after no contact from him I asked and he said Thursday; I responded OK, even though it was Thanksgiving day. He later said Saturday after he failed to come at the hour he set. I said OK. He came but did not bring a large enough piece of OSB to enclose my window opening. He pieced it together nicely though. The brickwork was well done. He cleaned up. The receipt he gave was his name, address and phone number with a vague description of the work, a little unprofessional to me."

"Jimmy and his wife, Elizabeth, both worked hard to make sure I understood the concrete overlay and stencil process...plus Jimmy had lots of patience with me, concerning the pattern and the colors. My once boring aggregate patio has turned into a beautiful cobblebrick patio! Jimmy got the color right and the look I was expecting. I am thrilled with the results and very appreciative of Jimmy, who works hard."

Lawns FAQs, answered by experts

Small amounts of geese are actually good for the environment. They help spread seeds and lead to more plant growth, but they’re often an invasive species, particularly Canadian geese. This means a small gaggle can quickly grow into a level that litters your lawn with bald patches and excrement.

No, definitely not. Pulling weeds by hand is the single most effective way to remove them because you're eliminating the entire plant—roots and all—so it won’t have a chance to grow or spread. Setting time aside a few times per week to pull weeds can keep them at bay. If the number of weeds gets overwhelming, then you can resort to other methods.

No, you cannot throw branches from your neighbor’s tree back into their yard, nor can you discard leaves or other plant matter that originated from their yard back over there if it happens to land in your yard. You are responsible for cleaning up plant matter that made its way into your yard.

Land-clearing projects often take professionals one to two days to complete, but your timeframe can get much longer—sometimes up to a week or more—if you need your pros to clear a large section of land, grind down multiple large trees below the ground, or clear especially dense or heavy materials, like landscaping boulders and brush. A land-clearing expert will usually give you an accurate timeline along with your quote to help you better plan your project.

It’s possible to over-mulch leaves. If the leaf mulch is thick enough that it’s blocking and smothering the grass, that’s a problem. Ideally, you should still be able to see the grass when you’re done mulching to ensure its ability to continue growing. The solution is to make another pass at the top layer of leaf mulch to collect some of the top layer.
