"Andy did a great job on wiring a new building as well as adding cat 5 wiring to my existing home. He worked around some challenging access issues for the cat 5 install and made sure everything was working before he left. The quality of all the work was outstanding. He provided some good advice in one aspect of the install in the new build, helping me avoid a costly mistake. He was very friendly, timely, and easy to work with. His prices were entirely fair. I 100% recommend Andy!"

"I’m very pleased with the bathtub replacement, Sheetrock installation, and painting work Cenarez Construction completed in my home. They were professional, reliable, and paid close attention to every detail. The bathtub looks beautiful, the Sheetrock was installed perfectly, and the paint finish is clean and even. They did an excellent job from start to finish, and I highly recommend their services."

"We bought an older house not knowing much about electricity, other than both of our vehicles are electric and need to plug in to charge. Long story short, we didn’t have enough electricity coming into our newly purchased home. We needed a complete upgrade. We got in touch in with Silvio and although what we needed was serious, he made it as painless as possible. He planned and coordinated everything. When the power company was there that morning to shut down the power, Silvio and his guys were there waiting with everything they needed. We had our power back on that very same day. They did a fantastic job at a reasonable price. Silvio kept his word and did everything he said he was going to do and we find that refreshing. 10 out of 10!!! Honest. Reliable. Trustworthy. Thank you SRM!!!! Definitely recommend and will use again"

Generator Install FAQs, answered by experts

Homeowners can often access federal tax credits, such as the Investment Tax Credit (ITC), which covers a percentage of installation costs. Many states and utilities offer additional rebates, grants, or performance-based incentives. These programs can significantly lower your upfront investment. Check the Database of State Incentives for Renewables and Efficiency (DSIRE) or contact your local energy office for current offers.

Natural gas generators are designed to run for extended periods of time, such as power outages during a natural disaster. Since there’s no limit to the supply of natural gas, they don’t need to stop for refills. However, generators do need maintenance, including pauses to check and add oil. Constantly running them will also cause a lot more wear and tear, leading to a shorter lifespan.

A home that is 2,500 square feet will likely need a 20kW to 25kW generator. Consult your local generator installer to confirm the generator size needed to power your home before purchasing a new one. Be sure to consider how much power your necessary devices need to run.

To determine the right size generator for your house, you should calculate the total wattage of the appliances and devices you want to power during an outage. List all essential items, note their start-up wattages, and add them together.

Here are some typical wattage requirements for common appliances:

  • Refrigerator: 600 watts

  • Large dehumidifier: 700 watts

  • Large window air conditioner: 1,400 watts

  • Water heater: 3,000 to 4,500 watts

  • Electric furnace: 5,000 to 25,000 watts

A 7,500-watt generator might be sufficient for essentials like a refrigerator, freezer, well pump, and lighting circuits. However, for high-demand items like a water heater or furnace, a whole-home generator is a better choice. A portable generator may be enough if you only need to power a few critical items.

While home square footage can offer a rough estimate, it is not always a reliable indicator. For reference, here are some typical generator sizes based on square footage:

  • 1,000 sq ft: 6–9 kW

  • 1,500 sq ft: 7–10 kW

  • 2,000 sq ft: 10–14 kW

  • 2,500 sq ft: 12–16 kW

  • 3,000 sq ft: 16–20 kW+

For the most accurate sizing, consult a professional who can calculate your home's peak and average power consumption and recommend the optimal generator.

Whole-house generators need to be installed on level ground several feet away from walls and other objects. Because they tap into the electrical system directly, they usually need to be close to your home electrical panel for a transfer switch installation. It also helps with installation if they are near to a gas line or propane tank installation.
