In 1985, I was a protege of a talented paper hanger in the field 35 years. In eight short weeks, my artistic ability had me hanging paperwith him side by side. In the months to follow, I got my first wallpaper contract with Doyle Wilson Homes and was the youngest contractor in that field at the time. In the years to follow, my attention to detail had created the responses to start and name my own company Custom Perfection. I left the new construction business to pursue a more personal career working individually with homeowner's such as yourself. The walls can also be damaged if they aren't prepared properly before you add the wallpaper. For example, if the coat of paint is too fresh when you put the wallpaper on the walls, it can peel away as you remove the paper. 

No, you don’t always have to remove old wallpaper before applying a new layer. However, you should pull off the existing wallpaper if it’s cracked, peeling, or in poor condition. If you need a stronger magnetic surface, or you need to use a different type of paint in the room (like waterproof paint in a damp basement), there are other accessible options. You could fit a steel panel over the wall, try magnetic wallpaper, or apply chalk paint instead. 

If you want an inexpensive shortcut, hang a pinboard or chalkboard on your wall. These removable options are ideal if you’re a renter who can’t repaint or plan to move in the near future.
