Also, for old appliances that aren’t in good working order, a coat of paint won’t help. It’s a safer long-term solution to replace old, faulty appliances

You might also consider refinishing your appliances if you want to achieve fun colors. For example, you might not be able to find a cobalt-blue refrigerator for the funky, retro kitchen of your dreams, but refinishing the fridge can help you achieve that aesthetic.

When it’s time to dispose of your old AC unit, first make sure a pro helps you recover any refrigerant left in the system, per federal law (the Clean Air Act), according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. 

Check with your city’s waste management department, or ask the retailer you purchased the new AC unit from if they take old units for recycling. Another option is to check for a Recycling Facilities Servicing partner of the EPA. These facilities are trained for proper refrigerant removal and AC unit disposal.

Considering ovens can last 15 years (and sometimes more), it is likely a better idea to repair a 10-year-old oven, assuming the repair won’t cost more than 50% of the oven’s value. So, for instance, if your oven is worth $1,200 and the repair is only $400, it’s a better option to complete the repair.

If you’re replacing wires from an electrical meter box to the breaker box, you may also consider installing a new meter or replacing or repairing the breaker box . You can tell if the circuit breaker is bad if you’re dealing with tripping or worrisome burning smells. Both projects should also be handled safely by a licensed electrician.
