"I hired CustomScapes to sod a good portion of our St. Augustine in the front yard and to install a sloping creek bed of rock to help with a drainage issue. Juan runs his business very professionally, He and his crew did an awesome job from beginning to end in one day. I now have a beautiful yard! I definitely recommend them to anyone needing landscaping projects."

"Carlos came out and was very professional and explained the proposed work to where I could understand; he was very patient. Unfortunately because of my budget I had to go with a company that quoted a few hundred dollars less."

"These guys are great!! They got all I was expecting and more. Elizabeth came out to quote me and in a couple of weeks (because I wasn’t in a rush) the guys came out and cut the branches, cleaned up the yard and hauled everything away! I will definitely use them in the future! Debbie Cannis"

"This is an A+ company. Start to finish, estimate to completion, Ross and employee were professional, courteous, and personable. He patiently responded to numerous questions and concerns, even assured we "inspected" the work to ensure our expectations were met. They were only $25 over another company's offer, which did not include cutting down the tree. Ross actually worked to remove a portion of the tree that had grown around our chain link fabric while not raising his price. We plan to use him for future projects and highly recommend him."

Landscaping questions, answered by experts

The most important thing to put under a rock garden is the appropriate soil. The specific soil needed will depend on the type of plants you’re growing as well as the environment you live in. You can also put non-woven or woven fabric under the rocks to add to the garden's structural stability.

Before you begin landscaping with rocks, put down a weed barrier or landscape fabric to prevent pesky weeds from poking through.

You should plant trees at least 15 to 20 feet away from your house, and more if the tree will grow large and spread its limbs. Trees pose several dangers to houses when planted too close. They can litter the roof with leaves and branches, create fire hazards, make a ladder for larger pests, and even damage the foundation as their roots grow.

Xeriscaped lawns are far more varied than many gardeners initially assume. The often-pictured rocky and cacti-filled landscapes are just one option. Many wildflower-, herb-, and mulch-covered landscapes follow the same principles without straying too far from the lush and colorful landscapes we have come to know. In fact, there are numerous xeriscape ideas for customizing an energy-efficient lawn to your liking.

Unless it only rains once in a blue moon where you live, you’re going to want water-loving plants in your garden bed or pot. A few ideas for plants that aren’t super fast-growing (meaning they’re good in pots or near foundations) and can handle a lot of standing water include:

  • Acorus (Sweet flag)

  • Colocasia esculenta (Taro or elephant ear): In many climates, these are annuals, making them less desirable because you need to adjust the chain again after each replant.

  • Equisetum scirpoides (Dwarf horsetail rush): non-dwarf varieties of horsetail are fast growers and can take over quickly.

  • Juncus effusus (Curly rush)

  • Osmunda regalis (Royal fern): Royal fern can grow quickly but can also handle being crowded, making them good container plants.
