I felt the price was quite high, but foolishly didn't get other bids. Shame on me. The work was satisfactory, although we have run-off problems and some dead shrubs which we don't expect they will ever fix. Because I had used them, I had them bid on a job putting additional up/down lights in a few more tree clusters around the house, as well as a refresh on the mulch. The Rep (who was my Rep on the original job) came out, took about 20 minutes to hear the details and walk around, and then handed me a bid for $5,400 (NOT including tax). This included 7 up lights, 3 down lights (total of 10 lights) and delivery and spreading of 8 cubic yards of cedar mulch in our flower beds. I was somewhat shocked at the price and how quickly he arrived at the number, so I had 2 other reputable landscape companies in our area come out. After coming out, it took them several days to prepare the bid. Obviously Acacia was the highest bidder by far. The next highest (Landscaper "B") quoted 6 up lights, 8 down lights, and 1 up light for a future flagpole (15 lights) for $2,100. Acacia was almost 88% higher for 5 less lights (and I confirmed they were same low wattage/LED brass lights installed previously). Acacia quoted $1,397.50 for 8 yards spread of cedar mulch where "B" quoted 8 to 12 yards of black dyed mulch (higher quality), delivered and spread for $1,216.00. I didn't choose "B" as the 3rd quote was even lower for the same job with 15 lights and some river rock and diverts to help with the runoff issue Acacia never addressed. I called Acacia several days ago to speak with the Office Manager and shared my frustration. I was pointed, but never raised my voice or was rude other than to tell her how embarrassed and disappointed I was to have been fooled initially. I have not heard back from them with an explanation of how their estimate can be so wildly off of what other landscapers would bid the job for. I did not share Acacia's bid with them at any time, although I did mention to "B" after they presented their bid that it was much lower than another company I had bid the work. He asked who, I said "Acacia", he smirked and said, "yeah, they run pretty high". I don't know about the other jobs they bid, but I felt like I had "sucker" printed on my forehead. We hired them to dig out some invasive ivy that we had planted a few years ago and then to put down some mulch. I had no idea how bad things looked until the crew finished the project. Not only did they dig up the ivy and put down the mulch, they also trimmed our bushes and dug up a few that looked pretty bad. They took great pride in their work and it shows! The leaves accumulate on the roof causing roofing and drainage problems, clutter the gutters, and have been the cause of water coming into the house. The first time I called Alamow was for trimming all the trees. Andy came out that same day to look at the trees and give me an estimate. He showed me how far back he would trim the trees to get them off the roof and additional trimming he would do to lift them up, shape them, and increase their health. Andy also identified a smaller magnolia tree in my yard that was starting to show some stress because it was overshadowed by one of the live oak trees. He discussed with me my options for addressing the magnolia too. He gave me a price and we set the date. Andy and his team came on day we scheduled and set immediately to work with the tree trimming activities as discussed. Andy trimmed the dead wood off the magnolia and trimmed back the live oak to allow the magnolia to get some sun. As requested, any good size wood he cut into pieces for me to use in my fireplace and picked up and hauled everything else away.
I called Alamow again in March to trim up the bushes, get rid of the leaves that had accumulated on the roof, mulch/mow the lawn with all the leaves, and in general get rid of all the leaves and acorns that had fallen this winter and spring that were coating my driveways, walkways, and planting areas. Once again, Andy came out the same day I called to take a look at the job and give me an estimate. Though I asked about doing the work immediately, Andy suggested I wait a couple weeks until the live oaks stopped dropping their leaves so that he would not have to come back out again. I agreed and we scheduled the date for him to do the work. Once again, he arrived on time on the scheduled date (which was after one of the recent rains). He trimmed back the trees on my roof again, removed the standing leaves and water from the roof, took pictures of the roof for me to use to get some roof repairs done, trimmed the bushes, mowed, blew, and picked up all leaves, twigs, tree branches, etc and hauled them away.
Andy has become my go-to guy for any tree or lawn service that I need around my house. I already know he will be coming out on a regular basis to trim back the trees and remove the leaves that accumulate on the roof."},"url":"https://www.angi.com/companylist/us/tx/san-antonio/alamow-lawns-and-tree-service-reviews-7701206.htm"},"position":10}]}

I do NOT recommend this company. After completion of tree trimming out septic lines began to leak. Four independent septic companies said the lateral lines had been crushed by being run over. BP Tractor's mulching equipment was directly over the area of our lines. I contacted them and asked...

FAQs for mulch and topsoil service projects in Castle Hills, TX
Topsoil costs from $12 to $55 per cubic yard, depending on the type you choose. For example, screened black dirt will cost about $15 per cubic yard. Loam (soil composed of sand, silt, and clay) costs about $17 per cubic yard. Standard screened topsoil costs about $20 per cubic yard. The type of topsoil you need depends on your landscaping plans.
Mulch costs anywhere from $30 to $150 per cubic yard, depending on the type you choose. On the inexpensive end, red and black mulch are about $35 to $40 per cubic yard, and are typically made from recycled waste wood like shredded old pallets or deck material. Cedar, cypress, and rubber mulch cost anywhere from $100 to $120 per cubic yard. A pro can help you determine the type of mulch most suitable for your landscaping needs.
Topsoil should go down first. If the topsoil is next to your house, make sure the grade slopes away from the house to keep water from pooling against your foundation and possibly leaking into your basement or crawl space. Don’t cover your decorative landscape mulch with topsoil as that defeats the purpose of laying down the mulch. If you’re trying to create a certain soil composition to improve plant growth, you’ll likely want compost mixed into the topsoil instead of mulch. Over time, any decorative wood mulch will simply decompose under the topsoil.
No, mulch itself does not necessarily attract termites even though it’s usually made of shredded wood. Some types of mulch like cedar or cypress resist termites because they’re toxic or unappetizing to the wood munchers. However, when the mulch is deep enough, say three inches or more, it creates a perfect habitat for insects of all kinds to build nests.
Although it’s not required to lay anything under mulch, it can help to put landscape fabric or plastic weed barrier down and lay mulch on top. The barrier helps keep weeds from growing up through your mulch. It also helps keep rodents and insects from burrowing into the ground underneath.
