The lifespan of a picket fence largely depends on its material. Wooden picket fences typically last 10 to 15 years with regular maintenance, while vinyl and composite picket fences can last 20 to 30 years or more due to their resistance to weather, rot, and pests. While this may be the preferred method of running a horizontal fence up a slope, there’s nothing wrong with installing your fence so it follows the undulations in the ground instead.

For the most part, goats are friendly and won’t charge at you, but there are exceptions to this rule, as there are with any animal handling practices. Typically, goats don’t attack unless they feel threatened. Avoid cornering or rough handling goats to avoid getting head-butted, bitten, or kicked, and always supervise goats when they’re near children or pets.

While power washing isn't a requirement before you stain a fence, it can make the job much easier and faster while reducing manual labor requirements. The stain will not work if the wood is full of dirt and dust, so power washing, sometimes called pressure washing, is a fast and effective way to prepare the wood for staining. Remember that you need to stain or repaint relatively soon after the wood has dried so that there isn’t time for dust and dirt to build up again. 

A high-quality wrought iron fence should last you a lifetime, but it will require some TLC on your end. Wrought iron fences are incredibly strong and durable, but they can be susceptible to rust and corrosion, so you’ll need to clean and refinish your fence every two to three years. If you notice rust developing, hire a professional fence repair company to clean the rust and reseal the area of fencing to prolong its life span.
