Gable roof construction can last for 100 years or more without needing structural repairs, although the lifespan depends on your climate. Since gable roofs are great at shedding rain and snow, the actual roofing material on top will last for between 20 and 100 years or more, depending on the material you choose. If you’re unsure that your gable roof is up to par, have a roof inspector take a look.

While you can technically install TPO roofing over an existing roof, it isn't always wise to do so. The more layers of material you add to your roof, the more weight it must support. You may also develop moisture issues by covering your existing roof with TPO. Your local building codes and regulations may actually require you to remove the existing roof before adding TPO, so check with your local municipality.

You can walk on a TPO roof, but you should only do so when necessary and wear footwear that’s less likely to puncture the surface. If you anticipate needing to frequently walk on your TPO roof, reinforce walkways to protect against punctures. TPO roofing can also be slippery, so in most cases, you’ll want to leave walking on it to the pros.
